Summary
editDescriptionFlower color and nectar volume as a function of pollinator species ranges.svg |
English: The frequency of occurrence as well high or low nectar volume correlates with the geographic range of its pollinator host. The differing morphologies of the flower species results from selection towards traits that are more attractive to their available pollinators. The hummingbird (blue) has a greater affinity for red inflorescence and demands a greater volume of nectar. The bee species (green) demands less nectar and is attracted to a more purple inflorescence. Hybrid flowers can exist where species ranges meet but occur with lower frequency likely due to less attractiveness to pollinators. With time, the morphs will speciate from continued isolation. |
