English: 10.00 Manchester (Piccadilly) - Bournemouth West express north of Goring & Streatley. View northward, towards Didcot, Swindon/Oxford, etc.; ex-GWR Paddington - Reading - Bristol - West of England, South Wales etc. main line. 'Castle' 4-6-0 No. 5054 'Earl of Ducie' (built 6/36 as 'Lamphey Castle', renamed 9/37, withdrawn 10/64) is heading a Saturday Relief to the Down 'Pines Express', tese inter-regional trains to Bournemouth being diverted after 1962 from the classic route over the Somerset & Dorset to run via Birmingham, Oxford, Reading West Curve and Basingstoke. From 1963 the 'Pines' was taken over by the Western Region [at Wolverhampton or Birmingham (Exchange Jct.)?], the GW (or SR) locomotive working to Basingstoke. Note that it is on the Up Slow line, after using the Didcot avoiding-line. |
