Description |
Stoneware jar with carved designs under turquoise glaze Qing dynasty, second half of 19th centurySuch pieces are popular wares, made for the home market and for export to other Asian countries and the West. They were made at kilns in south China, that also made tiles for roofs and bulstrades. Often a generic date of ”19th century” is given for such ceramics, so it is interesting to know that this jar was bought in 1897, from Bukowskis This jar is hexagonal, and has well-carved decoration of different flowers in panels round its six sides. It would originally have had a pottery or rattan lid, and have been used as a food container. |
