Notes
  • Significance: The first unit of this building was erected in 1854 by St. Joseph's Orphan Asylum Association, who transferred it in 1860 to the Sisters of Notre Dame. It was encumbered by a debt of $40,000, which was paid by appropriations from time to time by the Mother House of the Order in Milwaukee, the State of Louisiana, the City of New Orleans, and many organizations and private individuals. As needs increased, other sections were erected, until the building extended along the block on Josephine St. as far as St. Mary's Assumption Church, under whose auspices the Sisters operated the Asylum.
  • Survey number: HABS LA-1102
