As someone who loves cabovers, I'm a very big fan of this vehicle given its status as one of the few cabovers in the USA with a solid foothold in the marketplace. The vehicle is Dutch/English, and the story of its arrival here is an interesting one. PACCAR (originally Seattle Car Manufacturing Company and later Pacific Car and Foundry Company is an American company that, as of 2011-12, was the third largest manufacturer of medium and heavy-duty trucks in the world. The company grew throughut the 20th century by making a series of major acqusitions, purchasing Kenworth and Peterbilt in the middle of the century. PACCAR acquired Foden in 1975 and then gained control of the Dutch DAF and the English Leyland trucks in the latter half of the 1990's. Since PACCAR controls Peterbilt, Kenworth and DAF, it is able to create some standardization between the three marques. Since DAF is a very capable light/medium duty truck manufacturer and Peterbilt and Kenworth both required such a vehicle to compete in the American market, PACCAR simply decided to rebadge the DAF LF (which PACCAR-owned Leyland manufactures in England). The truck is sold here in the USA as both a Kenworth and a Peterbilt, and is a fairly common sight in the New York Metro Area. |
