Le toxicologue se réfère à différents types de références (seuils, normes ou doses tolérables ou admissibles), dont « Dose Journalière Admissible » (DJA) (pour les résidus de pesticides) ; « Dose Journalière Tolérable » (DJT), « Dose hebdomadaire tolérable » (DHT) ou DHTP (« Dose hebdomadaire tolérable provisoire » ; « Dose Limite Annuelle » (DLA) (pour les radionucléides).
