English: LIBI_00263_07849; A 5" x 4" photograph on cardboard backing. This image shows Lt. George Custer of the U.S. Army and Lt. J.B. Washington of the Confederate States Army. They are sitting in trees in Fair Oaks, Virginia in 1862. A handwritten note underneath the photo reads: “The Class Mates Lieu J.B. Washington C.S.A and [?][Illegible] Gen Jos E. Johnston at Fair Oaks. Beside him sits Lieu-George A. Custer of the 5 US Cavalry Both were West Point Graduates.” It was taken by an unknown photographer in 1862.
