Notes
  • Significance: Finger Piers 22 & 23, completed in 1942, are considered significant for their association with U.S. Naval history and the Mare Island Naval Shipyard (MINSY), the first naval installation on the west coast. Portions of MINSY comprise a National Historic Landmark. The piers are outside the Landmark, but within the Mare Island Historic District. These structures are contributing elements of successful base operations at MINSY. They are representative examples of pier design, construction methods and materials used for the construction of ship berthing area at MINSY during WWII, and are two identical piers completed in the same year. The addition of new berthing areas in WWII, such as the Finger Piers, allowed the naval shipyard to berth and service 100 ships at one time.
