DescriptionLuzon saber bicol-like features 1b.JPG |
English: The blade is a late-19th century Filipino sword, most probably used by the Katipunan, during the 1896-1898 Philippine Revolution.
The photo of the entire sword can be seen here. The peened tang on the butt end of the hilt points to a Luzon origin. Furthermore, the spiral engraving pattern on the hilt, as well as the characteristic grooves on the ricasso, all point to the influence of the signature minasbad sword of the Bicol people. The iron D-handguard and the blade shape on the other hand show a very heavy hispanic influence on the sword. The handle is made of carabao horn, and the small collar (i.e., ferrule) is brass. The blade is well forged, and hatched striation lines can be seen on the blade. The sword came from American collectors, but it is now back in the Philippines. Overall length: 555 mm (21.9 inches); Blade length: 441 mm (17.4 inches); Maximum blade thickness: 8 mm (5/16 inch) Other uploaded materials by the same author are here: (a) Luzon weapons; (b) Visayan weapons; (c) Moro weapons; and (d) Lumad (non-Moro Mindanao) weapons Category:Weapons of the Luzon people of the Philippines |
