Hello, Filhistorydotcom!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

[issue solved/ thanks!] how to rationalize grouping of existing categories edit

Hello! :)

Am new around here and I've been uploading images of ethnic Filipino swords and weapons, and there's many more to come.

Earlier, I've uploaded pics to this existing category: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Weapons_of_the_Moro_people_of_the_Philippines

Later on, I myself created three new categories, for the other pics I have and will be uploading, namely:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Weapons_of_the_Luzon_people_of_the_Philippines

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Weapons_of_the_Visayan_people_of_the_Philippines

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Weapons_of_the_Lumad_people_of_the_Philippines

With those four categories above, the ethnic swords and weapons of the entire Philippines would have already been all covered. By the way, lumad pertains to the non-Moro and original people of Mindanao.

Now the problem :) is this -- I want to put the Luzon, Visayan, and Lumad categories on the same footing or level as the Moro category. If it's confusing, all I want is that if someone is searching for media of ethnic Philippine weapons, then in one instance he or she should be able to see all four categories in one page, so that he or she has a clear idea of the four major grouping of Philippine weapons.

Later on, the Luzon category can have its own subcategories like Ilocano, Igorot, Kapampangan, Zambal, Tagalog, Bicol, etc.

And the Visaya can later on have its own subcategories also like Cebu, Panay, Negros, Samar, Leyte, etc.

Lumad can later on have subcategories such as Bagobo, T'boli, Manobo, Mandaya, B'laan, etc.

But for now, the four main categories (Luzon, VIsayas, Moro, and Lumad) ought to be structured such that they are all under the same level, and closely bunched up, so that it's easier for searchers to find the right image.

How do I go about doing this reordering of the categories?

Thanks in advance! =)

Hi sorry but I've only just come across this. I've created an additional layer Category:Traditional weapons of the peoples of the Philippines between the existing Moros category and the Weapons of the Phillipines category, the new categories now share the same level in the heirachy as the moros cat.KTo288 (talk) 07:51, 12 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hello. Many thanks! Now the hierarchy is much more sound and proper. Best wishes :) --Filhistory.com is my blog on Philippine history and ethnic weapons 08:43, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
You're welcome, switched of the help template as it was still showing up in the category users needing help.KTo288 (talk) 00:13, 21 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Your Photos on Commons edit

Hello Filhistorydotcom. Thank you very much for your exellent photos.I'am writing in wikipedia.de about blade weapons of all times and all contrys. It is very difficult to get good photos of old weapons, because the most collectors or dealers don't like to share them. So again thanks. Good luck and greetings from Germany--MittlererWeg (talk) 00:28, 16 November 2009 (UTC) P.S.
