De in Leerdam geboren Jansenius studeert theologie in Leuven en specialiseert zich in de opvattingen van kerkvader Augustinus over de goddelijke genade en de menselijke vrijheid. Jansenius schrijft zijn boek Augustinus dat postuum wordt gepubliceerd. Rome veroordeelt vijf stellingen, waarvan men –ten onrechte- zegt dat ze in het boek voorkomen. De veroordeling moet door alle geestelijken worden ondertekend. Diegenen die zich hiertegen verzetten worden ‘jansenisten’ genoemd.
