Description |
Svenska: KRUS. English: Porcelain meiping jar decorated in underglaze cobalt blueMing dynasty, mark and reign of Wanli (1572-1620). Meiping (meaning “prunus vase”) is the later name given to jars with constricted necks that were originally used to contain alcohol. Decorative jars like this would been carried to serve at table, having had liquor decanted into them from larger jars, and would originally have had lids. Although it has a Wanli mark, the piece is robustly potted and has grit adhering to the base. The decoration of jewelled pendants with the Eight Precious Things and sea creatures derives from Shan Hai jing (Classic of Mountains and Seas), and is decidedly popular in nature. |
