THE OAK DINING ROOM. WINDSOR CASTLE. The Oak Dining Room, if less rich in historical associations or in artistic treasures than those State apartments so familiar to visitors to Windsor Castle, has an interest all its own, for it is the Queen's private dining room, where, except on State occasions, her Majesty invariably takes lunch and dinner. Over the mantelpiece hangs a portrait of the Queen ; on the left-hand wall are two tapestries representing the "Hunting of the Calydonian Boa " and the " Death of Meleager." They were executed at the Gobelins works, and presented to the Queen by King Louis Philippe when her Majesty, accompanied by the Prince Consort, first visited France. The great dinners served on State occasions are given in a room panelled in white and gold, which looks out on to the East Terrace. |
