Description
Father Gregoire Girard (civil name: Jean Baptiste Girard), Franciscan friar and meritorious pedagogue as well as ecumenical priest, is depicted here as an educator. With his efforts oriented to Pestalozzi, he did much for the children of simple families by promoting public schooling.

Object history In 1850, the Fribourg government ordered a monument in honour of Père Girard from the Bernese sculptor Joseph Simon Volmar. It was inaugurated ten years later in the city of Fribourg. Raphael Christen, pupil of Volmar, created two reliefs shortly afterwards, which were attached to the pedestal of the Père Girard monument.
