Notes
  • Significance: The Ordnance Magazine is the most substantial military structure still standing at Fort Fred Steele. Completed in 1881, this massive stone building was the second and last magazine built at the fort- its predecessor was an 18' x 20' dugout which was covered by a dirt roof. In 1880, plans and specifications for the building were prepared, patterned after a similar structure at Fort D.A. Russell in Cheyenne. ... The Magazine is well designed and constructed with meticulous craftsmanship and as a result is in excellent condition today. The only modifications it has undergone are the replacement of the original tin roof with shingles and the removal of the shelves and their supports inside.
  • Survey number: HABS WY-86-C
  • Building/structure dates: 1881 Initial Construction
