English: Newquay - Paddington express descending Rattery Bank at Tigley. View westward, towards Plymouth and Penzance: ex-GWR South Devon main line. Another of the series taken on the infamous 'Summer Saturday in the West', 27 July 1957 (cf. SX7760 : Manchester - Penzance express ascending Rattery Bank near Tigley and others). The 10.00 from Newquay is headed - from Plymouth North Road - by Collett's first 'King' 4-6-0, No. 6000 'King George V' (built 6/27, withdrawn 12/62), assisted by Hawksworth 'Modified Hall' 4-6-0 No. 7905 'Fowey Hall' (built 4/49, withdrawn 6/64). Apart from conveying the odd local pasenger to Par, this train had absolutely no public stops anywhere on the long drag to Paddington, where it was due at 16.55 but - certainly on this Summer Saturday - its arrival was rarely punctual. |
