Summary edit

Description
English: Rhododendron periclymenoides. Pinxter flower, Pink azalea, Pinkster, Pinxterbloom azalea, Election-pink.

Original illustration caption reads: Figure XXII. Mountain or Hoary Azalea (Azalea canescens Michaux).

Because Rhododendron canescens (syn. Azalea canescens) is not known to have naturalized in New York, and assuming that this photograph was taken in the wild within the state, it is probable that A. canescens is an incorrect identification of this plant. It is more likely to be the similar species R. periclymenoides, whose range does extend into New York State.
