| Description |
English: Trip goods coming off the line from Temple Mills at Stratford Station. View NE from the London end of the main line platforms; ex-Great Eastern main lines from Liverpool Street etc. This little Holden J69 0-6-0T (No. 68571) was one of innumerable ex-GE 0-6-0T's kept at Stratford Depot, not only for shunting and trip work, but 1920-25 to work the intensive 'Jazz' service of Inner Suburban passenger trains out of Liverpool Street - until these were electrified after World War Two. Over to the left now is the 2012 Olympics site and Stratford International Station; the Low Level line ran underneath here to the Royal Docks and North Woolwich. This area has been utterly transformed in recent years: in the 1940-50's it was a vast area of smoky industrialisation - and a strong smell of 'chemicals'. (To me it was railway paradise). |
