Spotted tail is wearing a dark vest with a white shirt. A peace medal hangs around his neck. There is a single feather in his hair. One side of his hair is wrapped in cloth, the other is loose. He holds a pipe in his left hand. His wife is wearing traditional light-colored dress. The top is highly decorated with dark designs. She is also wearing a bone choker and necklace with long earrings. A handwritten note on verso reads: "Spotted Tail and Wife". The image was created by an unknown photograph on an unknown date. The original negative is at the Smithsonian Institution- National Anthropological Archives, but this print is copyright free.
