Notes
  • Significance: The Tinkling Springs Presbyterian Church near Fishersville, VA. was founded in 1740 by missionaries from Pittsburgh. They built two churches in the area, this one and the Augusta Stone Church at nearby Fort Defiance, Virginia. This present church at Tinkling Springs was built in 1850 replacing the original structure which was located across the road from this site. The cost of the 1850 church was $3,440. The main church has remained substantially as it was built. Some changes were made in 1890 most important of which were the replacing of the two side doors off the portico with a central door, and the addition of a small room at the rear of the church. A recent addition of an office and classroom wing has been made to the left rear. The church has no basement and the access to the roof framing has been sealed since the Civil War when it was used as a hiding place for Confederate soldiers.
