English: Vice-Admiral Sir James de Saumarez, 1757-1836, 1st Baron de Saumarez

At the very beginning of the Revolutionary Wars, Saumarez, in the ‘Crescent’, 36, captured the French frigate ‘Reunion’, 36, for which he was knighted. He commanded the ‘Orion’ 74 at the battle of St Vincent, 1797, and the Nile, 1798, at which he was senior captain. He is shown, half-length, wearing admiral’s full dress uniform 1812-25, with the ribbon and star of the GCB and the medals for the battles of St Vincent and the Nile.
