Gregorio López was a wandering hermit, born in Spain, who left for the New World in 1562. The author and the hermit both lived near the village of Santa Fe. Although López never became a saint, he was accorded the title zvenerabley, a distinction rarely given by the church to figures from the Spanish colonies
