Object history
Deutsch: Genehmigt vom König von Preußen 1909. Der gespaltene Schild zeigt vorne den hersehenden Löwen der Grafen von Sayn und hinten das Trierer Kreuz.
English: Granted by the King of Prussia in 1909.
The city was ruled in medieval times by both the Archbishops of Trier and the Counts of Sayn. The cross of Trier and the lion of Sayn both appear on separate 14th century seals of the city, with St, Marcellinus and St. Peter, the patron saints, as supporters. In 1681 Trier acquired the whole area and until the early 20th century only the cross was used in the seals. The present arms, granted in 1909, combine for the first time the lion and the cross in a single shield.

Other versions
This coat of arms image could be re-created using vector graphics as an SVG file. This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with {{vector version available|new image name}}.

It is recommended to name the SVG file “Wappen vallendar.svg”—then the template Vector version available (or Vva) does not need the new image name parameter.
