The cover image isn't working for a specific page

The current code prevents one from specifying a particular page of a DjVu or PDF as the cover page. Can this be fixed, if we want to keep it dumbed down (and I'm not sure that's necessary), we could inlcude an ifreq for when the parameter includes "File:. ." to allow us to override it. Currently if you use |page= you get no effect and if you use page=x you get two images and code displayed in the output.--User:Doug(talk contribs) 09:24, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

There is an "Image page" option now. TheDJ (talk) 10:15, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
I have been meaning to get to that for weeks, and have just been doing page=x for ages, so thanks for being far more efficient than myself.  — billinghurst sDrewth 23:57, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Start this book

What is the start this book link below the image actually for ? I tried figuring it out, but it seems to be useless. TheDJ (talk) 10:12, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

  • I think that if you use this on a group of image files, such as a category of jpegs, and you use this to create a book specific template, that can be used to take you to page 1 from any of the images. I'm not sure. It seems to me this should be an opt-in function, since I can't find a book that is actually set up to do this because the ones I found didn't have this template on title page; though it might be valuable if some of the existing jpeg collections were fixed. Making it opt-in would also ensure that it wouldn't display on multi-page image files, such as DjVus and PDFs, where makes no sense, unless someone actually wanted to read a DjVu on Commons, which wouldn't be very effective.--User:Doug(talk contribs) 12:36, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
Book is often used to create Category:Book templates. Most of those were set up with prev/next page links and this link will get you to the first page of the book. However I agree that start this book link is a little confusing and possible not necessary since people can just click on the title page image to get to the same place. --Jarekt (talk) 19:57, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Added a preload

To start the process of making it easier for me, I have created Template:Book/preload, and as we update the template we will need to remember to update that file, and I may get to the more technical components to make it easier to add for users.

  • As a note for users, to use the template preload at the moment, on the page of the file add

Using this template for partial scans

Should this template be used when a book, in particular a technical textbook, is being scanned for its images, but not the whole text. I'm thinking of cases such as Category:Scans_from_'Lord_Montagu_of_Beaulieu,_Cars_and_Motor-Cycles,_Vol_III',_1928, where many, although not all, of the plates and figures have been scanned, but there's no attempt to scan the text. I faced the same problem with Category:Ambulance 464 and opted to use Book only as a category infobox and for djvu file. Regular images from the book are using Information and Cite book. --Jarekt (talk) 18:02, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Documentation

Documentation doesn't seem coherent with the implementation

  • This template will categorize into Category:Anonymous books and Category:Books by various authors., if appropriate.
    at least with author=anonymous or unbekannt it doesn't, quite possible it works with other value of the Author parameter
  • This template will categorize into Category:Books by year, if publication date are provided in YYYY form.
    Doesn't work too.

Anyway I've some doubt about the usefulness of these automated categories, people will tend to fix metadata, e.g. providing a more precise date than a single year for Date = and they'll break the automated cat without noticing it. Quite possible the template is already implemented w/o automated categories and the the doc is only a bit out of date, but I prefer to ask before removing the Anonymous books, if appropriate. Books by year, if publication date are provided in YYYY form.   Fixed You are right. The documentation was out of synch with the actual code. The only categories added by the template are Category:Book templates and Category:Book templates without home category. --Jarekt (talk) 13:58, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, thanks, I saw that now in the #Auto-categorization thread. Phe (talk)

Default parameter for image =

What about this change

{{#if:{{{Image|{}}}}| | {{#if:{<noinclude>1</noinclude>}|}} }}

to

{{#if:{{{Image|{{{image|{{{Image page|{}}}}}}}}}}| | {{#if:{<noinclude>1</noinclude>}|}} }}

The effect is to fallback to Pagename for Image parameter if Image page is given and Image missing. This make sense for pdf or djvu file where there is no need to specify the image name. I didn't test this change. It can be tested on File:Dumas - Vingt ans après, 1882, volume 1.djvu by removing the Image = parameter. Phe (talk) 10:57, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Good idea!--User:Doug(talk contribs) 08:29, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
I got it to work in I will change it at Book after looking into previous proposed change. --Jarekt (talk) 02:45, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
  Done --Jarekt (talk) 15:44, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Category:Location not applicable

As per my suggestion at Category talk:Location not applicable, what about adding Category:Location not applicable to this template ? Jean-Fred (talk) 12:26, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

I do not like the idea and I do not like Category:Location not applicable much - I think that large fraction of images on commons would end up in that category. I can not imagine adding it to all images that need it. May be a better way would be an empty tag template they are not as visible and can serve similar purpose. --Jarekt (talk) 02:34, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Artwork from Book

Not to duplicate, but I opened a relevant conversation here: Template talk:Artwork#.7B.7BArtwork.7D.7D_from_.7B.7BBook.7D.7D--Codrin.B (talk) 20:48, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
