Ambiguous name

The Michigan Institute of Technology (MIT) have released software under several distinct licenses, some of them non-free. Thus, though the terms of this licese are commonly used, it is ambiguous and potentially confusing to refer to these terms as "the MIT license".

The same license terms are also known as "the Expat license", which is a better name since the Expat software has only ever been released under these terms, so the license name is both short and unambiguous.

Accordingly, I've created Template:Expat and encourage anyone using the ambiguous name "the MIT license" to use "the Expat license" instead.—the preceding unsigned comment was added by Bignose (talk • contribs)

It would be reasonable to make {{MIT}} a redirect to {{Expat}}. We should wait a little to see if there are any objections. In the mean time, I've moved Template talk:MIT to Template talk:Expat. Superm401 - Talk 04:04, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Category name

Regardless of the name of the template itself, the category name should not be at Category:MIT, as this should be a category redirect to Category:Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The new category name is not important, as long as it's clear and includes the word license (e.g. Category:MIT/Expat license).

Improvement and merge

I improved {{MIT}}, adding parameters to allow users specifying the license more precisely. {{Expat}} and {{X11}} were merged to {{MIT}}. --Tomchen1989 (talk) 03:33, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Enlightenment

According to the Free Software Directory Enlightenment is licensed under the the term of the X11 license but the copying license is slightly different : "[...] in all copies of the Software, its documentation and marketing & publicity materials, and acknowledgment shall be given in the documentation, materials and software packages that this Software was used. [...]". Is this an Expat license or X11? (Genium (talk) 20:41, 1 August 2011 (UTC))

X11 and Expat License are mixed together at directory.fsf.org, the license for Expat is X11 also. As described at fedoraproject.org (I believe it is true), the license for Enlightenment is a modified version of the common MIT license (Expat license), with an additional advertising clause that makes it GPL-incompatible. --Tomchen1989 (talk) 16:16, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Default year value

As discussed in Template talk:BSD#Making the current year the default copyright year, because normally the year should be the year of first publication, it's not reasonable to have the current year be the default year value.
