Thank you for making use of one of my photographs! This page explains how to properly acknowledge the license and attribution of one of my photos - in particular, by following the terms of the Creative Commons license. It does not constitute legal advice.
In a nutshell:
When you use one of my photos, you do so under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike license ("CC BY-SA"). You must attribute me as the photographer, provide a link to the license, and note any modifications made. Wherever possible, please do this as:

Attribution edit
One aspect (but not the only aspect) is providing attribution for my photograph.
I ask to be attributed as the photographer/copyright owner as:
- Photograph by Mike Peel (www.mikepeel.net).
Where you are using the image online, or in a hyperlinked document, then this attribution is fine:
If you are using the image offline, then please also write out the website URL, e.g.:
- Mike Peel (www.mikepeel.net)
If you don't want to link to my website, then you can also link to my Wikimedia Commons or Wikipedia user page:
- Mike Peel

Some of my images have different author lines, which are described on the image pages. In those cases, please use those attributions rather than this default one.
Noting the license edit
You should note that the image is available under CC BY-SA, e.g. by saying one of the following:
- licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0
- licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-alike license 4.0
- licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/)
- licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-alike license 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/)
Statements like "via Wikimedia Commons" or "via Wikipedia" are not sufficient - you must acknowledge the creative commons, or you're using the image outside of the Creative Commons license.
Derivative works edit
If you make any changes to my photograph (such as retouching it), then those changes must also be released under a CC BY-SA license. You also have to note what changes you have made in the acknowledgement. I would also encourage you to upload a copy of the derivative to Wikimedia Commons.
Commercial use edit
The CC BY-SA license permits commercial use. You must make sure that you follow the attribution and license terms. If you do make a profit from the work you have used a photograph of mine in, then I would ask that you consider making a donation to a relevant charity (e.g. the museum where the photo was taken, or the organisation that owns the photographed object), but this is not compulsory.
If you are using my photo in printed form (e.g. as a poster, magnet, and so forth), then you should include a printed copy of the attribution either on or in connection with the work. Providing attribution solely in the advertisement of the product is not sufficient.
Use outside of the Creative Commons license edit
If you want to use my photo outside of the CC license, or you cannot follow any of the CC license terms, then you must contact me to ask for permission. Depending on the reason, whether the photo will be used commercially outside of the CC license, and where the photo was taken, I may ask for a license fee to cover some of my photography equipment costs; for a compulsory donation to be made to an appropriate organisation; or I may say no.
Photographs of museum artefacts or historic buildings edit
If you're using one of my photos that was taken at a museum, or is of a historic building, then I would encourage you to donate to that museum or the owner of the building in order to support its conservation. This isn't compulsory, providing you're following the terms of the Creative Commons license, but it would be nice of you.

It's not compulsory, but I would like to see how you've made use of my photo! If you have used my photo in an online work, then please send me a link! If you have used it in a publication, then I would appreciate a PDF copy (contact me) - and in that case, please let me know if you're happy for it to be uploaded to my website.
