First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Naming of files edit

Hi Alexander, thank you for making the SVG files. IMO they are much more versatile than the PNG/JPG/GIF files. Please use a simple naming convention for your files representing flags: Flag of ENTITY [in DISAMBIGUATION].ext (only use the last part if disambiguation is needed). This will result in a more uniformly structured collection of images. Thanks for your consideration. Cheers! Siebrand 09:14, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi, and thanks for your comment. I was using the naming convention of the original files, but your suggestion makes more sense. I'll be sure to upload future files that way, and will see if I can change the filenames of the older ones. Best regards, Alexander the Drake 09:18, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
IF the files are already there it is a lot of hassle to rename them, as you have to upload them again and change references. As long as ' flag' and 'ENTITY' are in the filename, they can at least be found. I'd recommend against making that effort and wait for (if ever) functionality to easily rename images. Thanks for your advice. Fortunately, you caught me before I'd uploaded more than a handful of files.
I notice that you have made a number of SVG flags recently and are a frequent contributor to the Dutch Wikipedia. I hope you don't mind, but I've put up a listing (with links) of the flags I've already converted and the ones I intend to get to on on my subpage here.
I thought it might make it easier to not overlap our respective efforts and perhaps be helpful when replacing the older PNGs on NL.Wikipedia. Best regards, Alexander the Drake 23:27, 26 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Feel absolutely free :) Yes, I have converted a few files to SVG, just because I wanted a taste of what it was like. I decided that converting to SVG is not my thing... Great work that you are participating in the project of converting flags to SVG. Good luck and I wish you lots of fun doing it. Cheers! Siebrand 14:22, 27 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Tagging of files when SVG is present edit

Hi Alexander, you are currently tagging images like {{Vector version available|Flag of Schiermonnikoog.svg}}. You could also consider tagging {{SupersededSVG|Flag of Schiermonnikoog.svg}}. Siebrand 09:56, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Siebrand. There's a reason for that. Some of the originals are outlined so that they'll stand out against a light background.
Since I don't include the outlines in my conversions, I thought it was better to use the {{Vector version available}} on those, since someone might possibly want to use an outlined version instead of a non-outlined one. I use the {{SupersededSVG}} tag only where my SVG versions are exactly identical to the original flags.
But of course I can change things if you think it best. Regards, Alexander the Drake 10:07, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Nope, it was just a tip. You're doing great work and are following guidelines, so I wouldn't know why I'd ask you to change anything :) Siebrand 11:39, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

You have tagged the inmage with badname-tag. But the other image is not the same. Pease check this. -- Rüdiger Wölk 16:55, 1 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I had another incorrectly named image to request deletion for at the same time and copy-pasted its name instead. Fixed. Alexander the Drake 19:54, 1 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
