Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, Amos.schueller!

Hi Amos,
thanks for uploading historical images of Soshana. However, in File:Studio2.jpg a painting of the artist is shown. Because she is still alive and holds the copyright over her works, you need her explicite permission to upload this image under a free license to Commons. Also, if possible it would be nice to know the other person in the image, provided it is a notable person. Thanks. --Túrelio (talk) 09:21, 22 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

For this File:Alone in Mexico.jpg you absolutely need the permission of Soshana. Please go to Commons:Emailvorlagen, take the boxed text "Einverständniserklärung für alle Anfragen", fill in the URL of the photo, add the license of your choice, mail it to the artist and ask her to mail it back to permissions-commons-de@wikimedia.org after she has put her name and the date under it. --Túrelio (talk) 09:42, 22 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Copied over from my talkpage in order to keep the discussion at one place.

  • The problem is that I am the son of the artist on the photo and I have the rights over all her works including photographs and paintings. You can also see her homepage www.soshana.com, where you will find my name: Amos Schueller. How can I prove thate I have the explicit permission? Does wikipedia need a document signed by Soshana? I would be thankful if you could help me out with this question.
  • Concerning the other person on the photo, I did researches on every photo where Soshana is seen with another person, to check if it is some famous personalitiy, but in this case I did not find any name or information.

Being the son of Soshana is not a "problem", of course. It's really great that you want to contribute those images of and by your mother. If it's easier for you to communicate in German language, we can do that, as I'm a native German-speaker.
Just a short excursion about copyright. Photos and other works of art are under the copyright of the creator (photographer, artist) until 70 years of his death. Then they become public domain (gemeinfrei in German). However, works of art that are permanently installed in public space (of many, but not all countries) may be reproduced freely. But this will hardly be applicable for paintings and photos. By the way, this here is not Wikipedia, but Commons. Commons is a media (mainly images) repository to serve the Wikipedias, but also everybody else interested in the images stored here.
Now to your uploads to Commons.

  • If the historical photos showing your mother were taken (photographed) by yourself, you are the copyright holder and you are free to release them under a free license. If, on the other hand, the photo was originally taken by someone else, he/she holds the copyright until 70 years after his/her death. And you, even if you are in the possession of a print, need permission of the original photographer (or his/her heir) to upload a scan of the photo under a free license to Commons.
  • For you being the son of Soshana, we assume you have her permission to upload reproductions of her painting under a free license to Commons. However, as your name is not identical to hers, every now and then other users here might doubt the (assumed) permission and ask for it. Therefore I would recommend you to prepare a permission mail (as described above) for all reproductions of your mothers paintings you have uploaded to Commons (after you have done that). Then she would have to put her name only under 1 email. Or if that's not possible due to her age, you might sent-back the permission email from an email account/adresse that is clearly associated with Soshana (for example xxx@soshana.net if that exists). By the way, the permission email is not made public. It can only be accessed by the few members of the OTRS team.

Feel free to ask if something remaind unclear. --Túrelio (talk) 09:59, 22 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Amos.schueller!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
