Devas statues on Lantau Island edit

I borrowed this photo to use as an additional photo for my tattoo artist. I also used the photo in the NY Times "Why We Travel" section by Nichollas Zogopoulos. Perhaps you saw it. I love these immortal statues and want to memorialize one on my body. Thank you. M. Gartner

Hey that's great. I didnt sees it in the NY times. Can you somehow make a scan for me? Do i understand it right...will this pic get a tatoo? :) I agree those statues are wonderful. I also love the atmosphere at that place.--AngMoKio 21:05, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Request to announce Valued images on the German Wikipedia edit

Hallo AngMoKio!

I do not know if you are familiar with the valued images project, which opens for nominations on June 1, 2008 at 0:00 (UTC)? We are trying to do a little promotion job to give the project a good start on the major Wikimedia sister projects. One of the task at hands is therefore to publish this announcement on de.wikipedia.org. I have noticed you competent and active participation on COM:FPC, and I was wondering if you would make that announcement for us there, like on the Village pump and other relevant pages (does de have an FP forum or a graphics lab, if yes they could be relevant)?

If you do not have an account on the German Wikipedia or do not have the time or interest to do it, could you perhaps direct me to another de user who could do it?

Once done, please update the thread Commons talk:Valued image candidates#Announcing VI on sister projects. As a matter of fact you may want to have a look there to make sure another user has not done it already!

Happy editing, -- Slaunger 20:38, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

FYI, I have asked ABF to do this too. -- Slaunger 22:58, 30 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Focus problem on 400D edit

Hi AngMoKio,

Sorry for replying late. I lately spent a bit less time on Commons, but this should be back to normal soon :)

For my camera focus problem (whom I'm surprised you noticed because I reverted my changes quickly !) : It may be because of hard conditions, but I believe after some batchs of tests that my body was faulty. I shot hundreds (really) of shots to be sure. Also, I have a roomate (user:sanchezn) and we often buy the same equipment. He has a 400D and a 17-55 like I do, and I could use his body and lens to compare.

My body was faulty, it had a backfocus pb. After fix, I found out my 17-55 has a frontfocus pb ! miraculously, these two problems compensated each other which is why I never complained before. It was after I got my new telelens that I found out the whole story :)

I'm concentrating on buying new lenses first (the 70-200 f/2.8 IS is a pretty much expensive one... I'll have to save before buying something else), but I hope I can get a new body at the end of the year. The 450D seems a good deal to me, because of its sensor. As you say, I'll probably have to go for a 40D if a want a reliable autofocus though.

May I ask you something ? I spent 3 months in Singapore, and remember AngMoKio was an area of that country. Are you from there ? I noticed you speak german too, that's why I wonder.

Benh 11:13, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello Benh,
so in the end you got the camera and the lense fixed? You know, I still have my old 350D and plan to still use it on photo events on which you quickly have to change between different lenses. I plan to simply use one body with a wide angle lens and the other with a tele lens - this way I can quickly change. Especially on sports events this can be very helpful. But right now I don't trust my 350D concerning the focus - so it might be that I also have to get that fixed. How much does that cost?
No, I am not from Singapore. But I also spent some time there. I was there for an internship for 6 months. My office was in Ang Mo Kio. Now you know the secret about my user name, but don't tell anyone, ok-lah? ;-) Did you study in Singapore? During my stay I had a room at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) close to Boon Lay. But I also had some friends at the NUS, so I also know that University a bit. --AngMoKio 20:14, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
For now, only my body is fixed. Fixing my lense would take way too long, and I have a wedding of a close friend in 2 weeks, so I'll wait before sending it back. I can still use it for close subjects, and for landscapes, I can fix the error manually (not that accurately though). Fixing my lense will cost me nothing as it is still under warranty. I don't know how much it does cost otherwise.
I wish I had the same comfort as you do, with two bodies. Now that I have a general purpose lense and a tele, I could do the same. You must be strong to carry two bodies and their lenses ! I went hiking for a week a fortnight ago, and I carried my body + three heavy lenses (the better, the heavier) + tripod. It was much much a burden.
Ya loh, I will keep your secret with me. I spent 3 months in Singapore for an internship in 2001, and I also had a room in NTU. You do remind me the MRT voice "Boon Lay, this train is terminating at Boon Lay, all passengers, please, alight !". Benh 11:41, 3 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, photo equipment is quite heavy. But I only carry around everything, when I go somewhere only to take photos..otherwise I only have my 40D with my new 24-105mm lens mounted. But now I bought enough photo equipment for some time....I have to start saving money again.
hey it is great to meet another ex-NTU resident. I stayed in Hall 8, Block 43. The room was quite dark and humid due to the heavy tropical vegetation growing right outside my window. And I spent every night there with at least 5 lizards :-) ...that's something you first have to get used to. In the end we became friends and now I miss them. --AngMoKio 20:49, 3 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sorry again for the delay (I don't get emailed when this page is updated, hence the lag).
I see you have a nice lense+body combination :). I'll stop buying equipment soon too (I'm just wondering how to give enough hints to my friend to have her offer me a nice accesory for my forthcoming birthday -- without telling her too explicitly ;) ).
I think I was in hall 58 or 59, at that time, they were amoung the newest residences there, and I was quite satisfied of my room. The only downside was that they were twin rooms, the single ones being for the "good" students who managed to gather enough "points" if I remember right. I'm personnaly used to the lizards since I went to Laos (where I have my roots) like 5 or 6 times. Benh 22:09, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

puppet show edit

I asked at my talk page about the feeling of a puppet show that I have been having. What I really do not like about the feeling is that it brings with it a sense of trusting regular people a lot more than the people who have managed to put themselves at a place where such a thing could be done.

Real people are mostly very respectful and kind. -- carol (tomes) 03:29, 4 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Problems edit

I learned a lot about the way that species are named when I was sorting through those images and putting them into the galleries.

I don't remember their scientific names, but all of the butterfly photographs are gone now from the galleries. Calling the whole insect world anthro whatevers does not seem to have helped. Making a world that works for puppets is a challenge, is my guess as to what happened there.

The point is, and I would like for the previous text to feel more like it is from disappointment than anything else, but my main point is that I do not think that I am going to be able to pick up where you left off.

Without comparing the time spent doing it, I think you spent more time than I did -- I don't know that you spent as much time working with what was there though. I am not so interested in the history of it to determine that. Nice work when you can get it, eh? -- carol (tomes) 04:20, 4 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Greetings! I work at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, DC, and we are working on a distance-learning course on the subject of Interfaith Conflict Resolution, one of a series of courses being developed. These courses reach people all over the world, teaching conflict resolution skills to people who do not have other opportunities to access such information.

As a part of our course, we have taped interviews which discuss specific concepts, and we are integrating photos into these interviews for additional illustrations. I have seen some of the slideshows on your website, and we are interested in the possibility of using your photo. I did not see any information about permissions or licensing; is there any provision for use of these pictures?

Thank you. Please reply at your earliest convenience.

Hello! As you request on English Wikipedia, I'll answering your question. There is no problem with the image, only applying rules that images (and pages) on Commons should be deleted on English Wikipedia to avoid duplicates. This under en:Wikipedia:CSD#I8. I had mistaken with information given by the script telling that was under en:Wikipedia:CSD#I2. You can see more on en:User talk:Sdrtirs. Regards, Sdrtirs (talk) 17:10, 21 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
