Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Please, see Commons:Categories#Over-categorization. The Category:Tisza Volán is included in Category:Transport companies and Category:Companies of Hungary, Category:Buses in Hungary is subcategory of Category:Transport in Hungary and Category:Public transport. If all images were in all categories, the categorization were unusable. --ŠJů (talk) 20:15, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Azt mondja, hogy a Tisza Volán kategória a Tansport companies és a Companies of Hungary kategóriák alkategóiája, míg a Buses in Hungary be van kategorizálva a Transport companieés a Companies of Hungary kategóriákba. Ergo azt próbálja meg mondani, hogy csak a legalsóbb kategóriákba tedd bele a képet, a nagyobb kategóriákba nem kell; bőven elég a Tisza Volán, a Transport companies-be és a Companies of Hungary-ba nem kell beleraknod. Ezen logika alapján például egy makói szobor se lesz bekategorizálva a Category:Makó-ba, csak a Category:Statues in Makó-ba. --Burrows (talk) 13:08, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
