If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. Hello Bd2media, the following content you uploaded violates one or more of our policies and therefore has been or will soon be deleted:

File:Portland at sunset.jpg

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:
  • use in any work, regardless of content
  • creation of derivative works
  • commercial use
  • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.

And also:

Yours sincerely, Christian Ferrer (talk) 10:55, 3 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Christian Ferrer: User is still doing this, FYI. Seasider53 (talk) 08:08, 9 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Only a few images are not mine, and I have investigated permissions to use them. A few I have paid for (one cost me $650), with full rights, and the honest and simple point of my endeavors are to promote Portland accurately. If you look at many city pages on Wikipedia, "the people" do nothing but perfunctory postings of old imagery and historical facts. Nothing wrong with that, but that history has ended only yesterday. It is crucial to give insight to a city from its beginnings up to the present. I donate often to Wikipedia, along with numerous worthy charities in Portland (ME). One in the forefront now is the Abyssinian Meeting House, of which the city has pretty much neglected. It's the thirst oldest African-Amercian meeting house (and church) in the nation. It wasn't long ago that the city wanted to sell it to build a gas station! (And is probably fodder enough for a 60 Minutes story.) I would like to do a posting of this incredible house and its meanings on the page. Why is it not featured on the main Portland page? I've been working in media for many years on a notable national level. I was born and raised in Portland, and to think that I am posting others' images for some kind of selfish gain is the furthest thing from the truth. Obviously, some kind of stricter protocol is the rule here. I fully understand in today's crazy litigious world. But as we know, Wikipedia is a non-profit organization and the "people's library" of unrestricted information. Bd2media (talk) 15:00, 9 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Correction, "third" not "thirst." Bd2media (talk) 15:03, 9 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hi Bd2media. Commons is primarily concerned with the copyright status of the files its hosting and not so much with how such files are being used. An uploaded file needs to clearly comply with COM:L and it's the responsibility of the person uploading a file per COM:EVID to establish that it does. Files with questionable licensing tend to be deleted per COM:PCP.
How images are used in English Wikipedia articles is mainly the concern of English Wikipedia, and image use needs to be in accordance with en:Wikipedia:Image use policy. For sure, high quality freely licensed images tend to be most welcomed by Wikipedia, but there's no automatic guarantee that they will be used. Like textual content, images also need to be contextually relevant to the subject of the article; so, simply being OK from a copyright standpoint doesn't automatically mean an image will end being used. In some cases, a en:WP:CONSENSUS may need to be established through article talk page discussion when it comes to using an image. So, if you add some images to an article that are subsequently removed by someone else, you should try and resolve the matter on the article talk page and not simply re-add the images to the article. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:59, 10 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Who is responsible for deleting images on the Portland, Maine page that I took with my camera and posted to the page? Why would you do that? I contribute funds to Wikipedia and am going to make a formal complaint. Bd2media (talk) 15:52, 10 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Magnolia677: I added the above to the list started by you. I'm concerned that all of the images the user has added to Portland, Maine (at the very least) are all copyvios. I'm thinking I should remove them all to be safe. The user seems to be uploading the same ones under different filenames after they've been speedily deleted. Seasider53 (talk) 01:13, 9 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Incorrect. The images on the Portland page are mine. I paid for some of them for the rights. I can substantiate it all. The Commercial Street one is an image the creator has allowed for public use. Bd2media (talk) 01:46, 9 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
If you've purchased the copyright of this image and not just a license to use this image, then all you need to do is follow the guidance given here and send a COM:CONSENT email to the Wikimedia Volunteer Response (VRT) for verification purposes. Your going to especially need to do this if your photos have been previously published somewhere online or in print under a copyright license not compatible with COM:L prior to being uploaded to Commons. If the same applies to multiple files you uploaded, you can cover everything in a single email by just including the names of all the files you've uploaded. It's even possible to request "advance verification" for any future files you upload as long as they're your COM:Own work. You should also try to upload high resolution images (or at least as high as you're willing to release under a free license) with complete EXIF data as well since this can also aid the verification process. Finally, you can only do this if you own the copyright over the files you're uploading; if the copyright holder is someone else, you will need to get them to send a CONSENT email to VRT as explained here. Even if they give you their permission to use the image or have otherwise made it available for public use, their CONSENT is still going to need to be verified. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:43, 10 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:Commercial street portland.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Commercial street portland.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Who is resopsonsible for deleting images on the Portland, Maine page that I took with my camera and posted to the page? Why would you do that? I contribute to Wikipedia and am going to make a formal complaint. Bd2media (talk) 15:45, 10 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
A record of all the edits made to a Wikipedia article can be found its page history; so, if someone removed any of the images you added to an article, you should be able to find out by looking at the article's page history. Perhaps the person who removed the images left an edit summary explaining why. Just for reference, while it's great that you've contribute money to Wikipedia, it doesn't give you any special editorial control over what's written on Wikipedia. In addition, the Wikimedia Foundation pretty much has almost no control over article content because that's the way Wikipedia has been set up to operate. Wikipedia article content (including images) is determined through en:WP:CONSENSUS for the most part, and the use of images is sometimes one of the things that needs to be resolved through discussion when there disagreements over it. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:47, 10 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
