Hello, Bxzooo!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content, Peggy Adler, was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope. Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at educational media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. The expression “educational” is to be understood according to its broad meaning of “providing knowledge; instructional or informative”. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. Each of these other kinds of content have their own projects: Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wiktionary and Wikiquote. If the content seems to fit the scope of one of those other projects, please consider contributing it there. Otherwise, consider an alternative outlet. If you think that the deletion was in error because the contribution really was in scope, you can appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests, giving a reason why it fits our scope to help others evaluate the matter. Thank you for your understanding.

I'm at a loss as to what to say/do. Everything I've uploaded to Wikimedia Commons is a photopraph, illustration, graphic design or document with all rights owned by me and posted with my permission -- each with multiple categories listed. So why does it say they they have no catagories? And some say no link, even though each and every one is linked to the Wikipedia page Peggy Adler. And today (8/3/2011) I saw a notice stating that they may be deleted!!! So it seems I need help. Soon. Please. Regards, Peggy Adler user/bxzooo Bxzooo (talk) 22:14, 3 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Peggy. I didn't realize you were you. If you'd like to release things that you own the copyright to you have to go through OTRS. You send them an email verifying who you say you are (preferably from an email address that's listed on your website or something like that) and then they mark the files you uploaded on Commons with a special tag saying it is verified. A select amount of people have access to OTRS so it is much more private and confidential. 23:00, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi there and THANX for the help!!! What e-mail address do I use to verify that I am, in fact, who I say I am. And I do not have a website, just a Facebook page, which is restricted to "friends". Is there any way I can link this without opening it up to "everyone"? This morning I did edit the info boxes for my uploads and put in the copyright links where applicable. Hope that what I did didn't screw it up!!! Please do let me know what else I need to do or undo) to bein compliance. I am so very greatful for all of the Wiki assistance I've received, so far, both at Wikimedia Commoms and Wikipedia. Regards, Peggy Adler|User=bxzooo (bxzooo.nyc@gmail.com) Bxzooo (talk) 14:52, 4 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

No problem. If you email permissions-commons wikimedia.org that is sent to the OTRS system. For an example consent form take a look about halfway down on the COM:OTRS page. You can copy/paste that in the email and fill in the necessary fields. Having a publicly listed email is not always required so you don't have to work about opening up your Facebook profile. :-) Killiondude (talk) 17:00, 4 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:Sets & Numbers Book Cover.pdf. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

File:2nd_Puzzle_Bk_Jacket_&_Flaps.pdf edit

File:2nd_Puzzle_Bk_Jacket_&_Flaps.pdf has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Killiondude (talk) 22:43, 3 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

P.S. I deleted the text for the dupilcate file/upload. Hope this was OK. And if it did not delete the file itself, can you do it? I want to keep the one that says it's a "Disclaimer". Regards, Peggy|User=bxzooo Bxzooo (talk) 14:57, 4 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

P.P.S. How do I keep "Peggy Adler" from being deleted from Wikimedia Commons? Peggy Adler|User=bxzooo 108.74.113.78 15:15, 4 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

There is no "new" user 108.74.113.78, jus the same old, same old. I merely forgot to sign off with User=bxzooo and the mandatory Bxzooo (talk) 15:34, 4 August 2011 (UTC). Regards, Peggy Adler|User=bxzooo Bxzooo (talk) 15:34, 4 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

No worries. We all forget to log in at one point or another. The page Peggy Alder was deleted from Wikimedia Commons because it doesn't fit the scope of the project. This project is just a media repository site. I'm not sure what you had listed on the page but biographies or articles are not a part of this project's mission so they are deleted. Killiondude (talk) 17:02, 4 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

OK. But are the images that were there still going to be at the pages they were linked to, at the appropriate reference points in Wikipedia articles, for which the images were uploaded in the first place? Most were for "Peggy Adler"; some were for "Irving Adler"; and one was for the "Liberty Green Historic District". Please Advise. Best Wishes, Peggy Adler User bxzooo Bxzooo (talk) 19:11, 4 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

If we can deal with the licensing issues via OTRS, yes you can use them on articles. Killiondude (talk) 19:26, 4 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

I already sent an email to OTRS. Other than that, what can I do? One of my documents has already disappeared from the article. Can I upload it again? Or what? I really need assistance with this!!! Best Wishes, Peggy Adler User=bxzooo Bxzooo (talk) 19:45, 4 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:Peggy Adler on Cape Cod.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. Dear User Andrignola, I, Peggy Adler, am the copyright holder of the photo "Peggy Adler & Vice Presiden Biden". The picture was taken of me/for me, with my own camera, by the Secret Service, and I am giving my permission for its use at Wikipedia. The same is true of the photo of me/for me at Cape Cod. It, too, was taken with my own camera. What information do I need to put into the upload to correct any misunderstanding as to who owns the rights to these photos? Ssincerely, Peggy Adler User=bxzooo Bxzooo (talk) 19:37, 5 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Image filter referendum edit

Today I received the following e-mail and when I went to vote in the referendum, was told I an not eligible. Since the message, below, says that I am, what am I to do?:

"Dear Bxzooo, You are eligible to vote in the image filter referendum, a referendum to gather more input into the development and usage of an opt-in personal image hiding feature. This feature will allow readers to voluntarily screen particular types of images strictly for their own accounts.

Its purpose is to enable readers to easily hide images on the Wikimedia projects that they do not wish to view, either when first viewing the image or ahead of time through individual preference settings. The feature is intended to benefit readers by offering them more choice, and to that end it will be made as user-friendly and simple as possible. We will also make it as easy as possible for editors to support. For its development, we have created a number of guiding principles, but trade-offs will need to be made throughout the development process. In order to aid the developers in making those trade-offs, we need your help us assess the importance of each by taking part in this referendum.

For more information, please see http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image_filter_referendum/en. To remove yourself from future notifications, please add your user name at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_nomail_list."
