Note for you edit

Dear Cam,

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, too many uploaders here don't have the courtesy to properly attribute the author of a photograph by giving a link to the author's immediate flickr or personal web site account. All they give is the source for the picture which is not right. I try to correct the situation sometimes...but there is simply too many pictures coming in. Also, I have to work in the real world and when I'm on wikipedia, I don't earn an income. I license my own pictures freely and if someone uses them and gives me direct attribution, that's fine with me.

If you are interested, here are three photos--of a Hollywood celebrity, an ancient art treasure and a massive mountain--which I sourced from 3 different flickr owners. Since they agreed to change the license and make it copyright free but requested clear attribution by name if possible, I also placed their names in the image titles: 1 & 2 & 3 When I contact people on flickr, I always say, "will you be willing to licensing picture X as CC BY or CC BY SA ie..copyright free for this wikipedia article?"....so that they know exactly what I am saying. Some people say no, some totally ignore me and some are open to my suggestion and agree change the license. Everyone is different in this world. I was more active in 2008 and 2009 but I'm less active this year since I have much less time and my health is not the best. Such is life. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hello, Cam Vilay!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
