Thanks for your work of identifying unused/out-of-scope files.

Hi Cholo! First of all, thanks for helping with the fight against the backlog of uncategorized pictures. I was trying to clean up Category:Media needing categories as of 6 October 2008 and noticed that you nominated File:Entropía de una fuente de Markov.pdf for speedy deletion. My Spanish is bad, but I think there's a good chance the file is indeed out of scope. Nonetheless, according to Commons:Deletion policy, scope isn't a reason for speedy deletion of files: unlike copyright violations or attack images, there is no emergency in deleting out of scope files and so such files need to go through a regular deletion request. Also, could you remember to notify the uploader when you nominate a file for deletion? Cheers, Pruneautalk 14:25, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

no, sorry, in the moment that is to complicated for me - as far as I see nearly all of my speedy deletion gone through without problems (two or three were reverted, of about 70 (just an estimation)). Perhaps Turelio and Abigor (who have done most of the deletions) see it in the other way. More or less I have waited for an intervention like yours. In my opinion 60 to 80 percent of these uncategorized files can be deleted without any loss. I will stop my work here for the next time, I dont want to start endless discussions with deletions. (I am not angry.) Best wishes Cholo Aleman (talk) 14:35, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

You're right, the policy is bad. I've started a discussion to change it at Commons_talk:Deletion_policy#Out_of_scope_files. Pruneautalk 13:44, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

files without a categoryEdit

Thx. This one is with 2 cats now :) Let me know about others files without cats. Przykuta (talk) 18:18, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks - the other two were from the same day, see File:Krajowa Wystawa Psów Rasowych Rybnik 2006 przed bramą.jpg File:Krajowa Wystawa Psów Rasowych Rybnik 2006 polskie rasy.jpg, one of them a dog-contest?! - most of the authors of today uncategorized files were active only a very short time, so I am lucky to find still active people Cholo Aleman (talk) 13:27, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

Deletion policy - out of scope filesEdit

Hello,

I don't understand this urgency feeling about out-of-scope files. I don't see why there is a need to speed up the process of their deletion ? What harm does it make to keep these files one month after someone finds them and says "I think it should be deleted" ?

Basically, I don't see why it is more urgent to delete an "out-of-scope" file than to delete all files requested for deletion for being copyright violations.

The problem on Commons is that the Requests for Deletion take too much time, with some requests lasting up to 6 months.

The problem is that there are not enough admins and that the admins want to remain a small group, being reluctant to give the admin powers to more people.

They prefer to do a lot of speedy work as a small group rather than do a more slowly work as part of a big group.

Teofilo (talk) 19:46, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

combined deletionrequestEdit

Hello, you asked for deletion of File:DS-2006-2 S12-13.png. The user contribution page shows four files of same origin: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Sdfb . Can you make a combined request for all four ? Or can you explain me how to make a combined request? --Havang(nl) (talk) 09:27, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your useful hint! - I made three more regular deletion requests; I tried one mass deletion request, here Commons:Deletion requests/Images of Roland von Bagratuni, but I had a problem with another one (also for files of "Roland von Bagratuni"), the procedure for "mass deletion requests" is described here: Commons:Deletion requests/Mass deletion request. Perhaps you can tell it to the admins turelio or pruneau, who are also engaged in the clean-up of uncategorized files. More or less in a "higher" sense this is not really a copyright violation, because I believe that the uploader is the author of theses very strange files. "Best category: Category:Pennisetum clandestinum"Edit

Hi Cholo - happened on this comment on your user page . . . Classic! There's no end of similar Starr cases which I've come across. Why he had to include all his awful holiday snaps . . . What I do is for the files which don't obviously show the titled species, is to remove the species category, and dump the pic in whichever of these categories best applies:
Category:Aerial photographs of Hawaii
Category:Airports in Hawaii
Category:Beaches of Hawaii
Category:Coasts of Hawaii
Category:Landscapes of Hawaii
Category:People of Hawaii
Category:Restoration of habitats
Category:Roads in Hawaii
Category:Trails in Hawaii
Category:Transport in Hawaii
Take your pick! There may be other suitable ones too. I also remove the mention of the species from the text, when the species isn't obvious in the pic (as e.g. here). - MPF (talk) 23:25, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

thanks - if the pictures are OK, I will add some of these categories. Cholo Aleman (talk) 19:44, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

Your WorkEdit

Hi Colo,

Giorgio writing. Recently we have met in a deletion request of a 1938 picture. Different opinions but it's normal in a project like Commons. Not talking about Wikipedia. Anyway today I stumbled on another picture revisited by you so, very curious indeed, I gave a glance to your contributions on Commons and I have to say that I get really impressed by your work. Neat and precise (as I am not unfortunately). Fantastic. Hope you won't quit doing it. And we share the same passion, apparently: I like to categorize as well. A pleasure to work picture by picture with you. Sincerely.--Giorgiomonteforti (talk) 20:47, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your positive response! - I just remember now where we met: one picture of the D'angelis family, some of them categorized as "Hotels in India" - I stumbled across of them several times. Hm, I try to be precise - many of the uncategorized can only be described with new, large categories like "Logos" or "Men". I just thought about to start a (half funny) group like "Cats association" for people who are engaged in categorizing. - I know only about five people who are interested in it: Pruneau, you, Havang(nl) (not the exact name, user from the netherlands) but I did not look out for others. All the administrators are engaged with hunting for copyright violations or missing licenses (as turelio once told me). And frustratingly we can hold the number of uncategorized files only constant by 116.000 (former around 113.000). More or less it is a pleasure like solving an enigma. Best wishes to Italy (sorry, I just see that you live in Poland) Cholo Aleman (talk) 11:17, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

SplügavenscEdit

Hi Cholo, very interesting picture indeed.I found out that Splügavensc is a small town in the municipality of Poschiavo in the italian Switzerland canton of Graubünden. Happy to be helpful! --Giorgiomonteforti (talk) 11:37, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

Hola cholo. Muchas gracias. --Pruxo (talk) 18:12, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

File talk:Шарира2.jpgEdit

Hi Cholo Aleman, we can use the {{duplicate}} template for tagging duplicated images, specifying wich one is the duplicate. Best regards! -Aleator (talk) 11:48, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks! - more or less I know that, but I was to lazy to use it (I planned to go through my comments after a while) Some time ago I was looking for the page with all these templates, but I cannot find it in a short time Cholo Aleman (talk) 13:01, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

out of scopeEdit

Some more ooS files: File:Memorial (jair).JPG, File:Gatita calienta porongas.jpg. --Túrelio (talk) 21:41, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

Help:Gadget-HotCat#Control-clickingEdit

Hallo Cholo Aleman. Kennst du diese Möglichkeit schon? --Leyo 17:13, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Cholo Aleman (talk) 09:30, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Category: personal imagesEdit

Hi Cholo Aleman,
in case you don't know that cat already, you might have a look at Category:Personal images for oos-cases. IMHO, this cat shouldn't exist, as we have the template {{userpageimage}} for such images. --Túrelio (talk) 19:44, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

I thought it was replaced or merged with the cat "User page Images". This is already much bigger. Thanks for the hint - I will have a look at it. Cholo Aleman (talk) 19:48, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

Admin?Edit

Hello, Cholo

We've run across one another from time to time -- while we don't always agree, I respect your thinking. I'm trying to recruit more Admins as we surely could use the help -- the backlogs are growing. So, I wonder if you have ever thought about running -- you certainly have the experience for it and you appear to be pretty mellow.... Anyway, give it a thought. Regards,      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 17:34, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the trust in me - at first I have to look up, what mellow means, because my english is far from being perfect... - Unfortunately I have nearly no idea about copyright laws an copyright problems here, Turelio once said to me, that this is the main duty of most administrators. And I am far from being convinced about central issues of wikimedia-projects, I see many contradictory policies. For instance: there should be a strong policy for copyrights in the commons - but everybody can upload everything and the admins and users are runnung behind bad files to look for sources etc. (In the German Wikipedia there is a discussion to give admin-rights to all users with a certain editing history.) Best wishes Cholo Aleman (talk) 07:51, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

I could say, more, but I will just leave it now -- I understand your concerns, but remember that every time you make a comment on a DR, you could be closing it and saving other Admins the work.     Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 18:07, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

I would also be happy to nominate you for Adminship. Let me know if you're interested. In response to your uncertainty above: If you were made admin, you wouldn't have to work on copyright violations, there is work available in many areas. For example, you could evaluate deletion requests based on COM:SCOPE :). --99of9 (talk) 12:51, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

Corriere della SeraEdit

Hi Cholo, what a pleasure to work with you again. About the image you posted me it's taken from "7" [sette] that is the weekly magazine issue of the daily paper "Corriere della Sera", the first newspaper in Italy for selling. The picture it's the cover of an article about this 2 guys, brothers, that have (or at least had) a office in Italy on-line with New York and San Francisco (back to 1995 I guess it was a great news). They are the authors of a CD-Rom called "The Gospels" winner of Emma-awards, a sort of high-tech oscar (according to the visible text), defeating Bill Gates and Kevin Kostner. A couple of italian silicon-valley-like promises. Back to 1995, naturally. In my opinion the image is over-copyrighted even if it seems, from the nick, that the uploader is one, or both, of the 2 guys in the picture. Even if it was so, they are the subjects of the picture and not the copyright holders of it. Moreover this is a scan from a copyrighted magazine so no way they have the permission to release it under a free license. About the rest, I'm still in Spain enjoying the summer fading away (it's still summer over here). Many things are happening in my life, in this moment, and I'm less present into the community but I'm still on Commons' crew. Thanks for asking, my friend. Hope to have been helpful.--Giorgiomonteforti (talk) 07:11, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

Copyright Richard GregoryEdit

Hallo Cholo,

Strasburger (talk) 11:02, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the categories - HotCatEdit

Thanks for the tip :-) (but I already new that :-). I am adding categories to completely uncategorized images with cat-a-lot, and deliberatly left the "uncategorized" tag as I am generally adding only a single (not very specific) category to each image to get it somewhere that others will actually find it, and they still really need proper categorization. There are about 180000 completely uncategorized images out there (some going back to 2008 :-). --Tony Wills (talk) 07:24, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

hm, first time I see this Technique - and I have to commit "I am not convinced" (in Germany a famous quotation from Joschka Fischer) - In my opinion: If you add one fitting category and if there is an interest in the files, there will be other people who categorize it further. I understand your intention, but in your way, the tag "uncategorized" is not correct for the file any more. To add categories to uncategorized files is one of my main hobbies here. If there is one correct category this must be enough. Many of these files are more or less strange logos, private diagrams and so on, and all kind of this stuff, that can be deleted in the long run (this may not be a consensus). And as far as I see: Many of the existing files have overwhelming or wrong categories - so one correct category is above the average (more or less). Best wishes Cholo Aleman (talk) 07:49, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

PS: your technique will be useful for new uncategorized files, but not for the old ones from 2008 (I see examples in your edits) Cholo Aleman (talk) 07:52, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
Eventually the categorization bot will be run again and it will automatically remove the uncategorized tag. Yes, you are right one category does make the uncategorized tag wrong, but I will tell you the real reason the tag is still there: cat-a-lot doesn't know how to remove it!, so I have no choice (apart from manually doing it :-). What was the problem you saw with the 2008 files? --Tony Wills (talk) 08:16, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
If this is the reason: why do you not use HotCat instead? - Problem for the old files: It is confusing to have this semi-categorized files in the old uncategorized - there is a sharp line between really uncategorized files and files with one correct cat - and this line is confused with your technique. Cholo Aleman (talk) 08:22, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
HotCat is great for easily adding multiple categories to one file at a time, cat-a-lot can add one category to dozens at a time. Different applications. Great for moving a bunch of files from one category to another or adding categories to files found using the search function. (if you haven't found it, it is also turned on using a gadget in preferences) :-) --Tony Wills (talk) 09:13, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
  • Thanks for your message. Yes I am aware that the bot has finally started removing it's uncategorized templates (as I expected, and mentioned above). I am keeping a watch, and any files in the uncategorized-by-month categories that the bot removes the template from, I also remove the uncategorized-by-month category (usually replacing it with a real category where one is obvious). I also remove the uncategorized-by-month category when someone else adds a category using hotcat.

Categorization stats - 2011-07-11.png

I agree that one or two non-specific categories does not make a file categorized, but as discussed above the expectation is that once it is in the categorization system, the categories will be refined. But look at the graph, ever since Jan 2011 we have been loosing the battle, more and more files are being left completely uncategorized (the glitch in June was due to the bot being fooled by the new upload process). My intent is to give at least minimal categorization to old files (most of which haven't been used, otherwise the common-sense bot would suggest categories based on where they are in use). Many of them will probably be deleted because they are just personal images, or spam and don't actually need real categorization (ie there are a large number of photographs of men, many of which are often unused user-page-images. And there are a large number of company logos probably uploaded for promotional purposes.). I am currently up to December 2009, and estimate that I have added categories to about half of the uncategorised images for 2009. I intend to stop at the end of 2010, and go back and start adding more specific categories. Your comments on any better plan are welcome :-) --Tony Wills (talk) 23:59, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

Images of EMAD KAYYAMEdit

Hi… How are you, this is EMAD KAYYAM, kindly I wish if you please let me know what's wrong with my illustration:

File:Atlantis_imagined_being_in_the_Atlantic_Ocean_and_fitting_with_Dr._Emad_Kayyam_observations_and_view_of_similarities_with_the_nasal_cavities_and_sinuses_in_the_human_face.JPG

Kindly this file is very important as its show how Atlantis fit will with the shape of the nasal cavity as it complete the shape of a missing part that complete the picture.

Also it show the consequence of how that can be happen by presenting the central part of the world map three times to figure out the similarity with the nasal cavity in a coronal section in the human head.

Thank you mush and I appreciate mush that you look and check my figure file.

--94.142.49.202 11:06, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Hello Emad Kayyam, thanks for your contribution : the point is already made in the deletion request: this is your private theory and (in my opinion!! - the DR will show is this is the opinion of the majority too) this is out of scope of the commons. Please use it (for a long time and undisputed) in an article in a wikipedia. --Cholo Aleman (talk) 15:37, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
