If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Do you need a hand with anything? I can undelete anything that got deleted, and help you fix any problems. The images look fantastic, I might go a little higher resolution when you're scanning if you want, so you can get them onto Featured pictures; otherwise, no problems. =) Click on (talk) and leave me a message there. Thank you so very much for the images of antiquarian books that you up loaded throughout the years. They are spectacularly beautiful. I just found one while reading an article with today's date about a current news story in the popular online media. Your efforts make the world a better place! That is something to be proud of! (I wish I could say the same.) Don't concern yourself precisely with the subject matter of the article, I confess I didn't even glance at it after viewing your glorious image, this one

in fact! I glanced at the copyright details for the image, and was somewhat concerned that the image was perhaps a work of art itself. I didn't know if it were your photograph though, in which case all would be well. However, I noticed, in the metadata for some later photographs of antiquarian books you had contributed, that there is now a line of text saying that photos of works of art or literature where the original works are no longer under copyright are admissible, or perhaps a better word would be acceptable <smile> in Wikimedia Commons. I might try to add a note to that effect in the talk page for that photo, as I don't want it to be erroneously deleted, as some of your earlier contributions may have been.

This brings me to the second matter, your recent, May 2012 contribution of two pages from a text written by Torquato Tasso, title was Gerusalemo (which I have certainly misspelled). It is lovely! I noticed that you used a non-existent WP category, Antiquarian books, or maybe Antiquarian works, I don't recall which, other than it was not in existence. I search both manually and using the appropriate bot for other suitable categories that existed. I found two and replaced your category with those two, 1724 and Books by Torquato Tasso. I hope that is acceptable. I would like to incorporate the image in the entry for the book on English Wikipedia, as Jerusalem Unbound (I think). I hope that this all seems okay to you. If not, just reverse anything I have done. Alternatively, leave me a message on my talk page and express your displeasure, in very brief language if you prefer, and I will happily comply with your wishes. Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open! edit

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.
