Hi there - I'm not sure how I could be more explicit, as I've given the HABS public domain tag for each of these photos, along with the exact HABS reference number for each Library of Congress entry. You can see clearly comparing with File:Eryon arctiformis Solnhofen Plattenkalk.jpg, both are very diferent, see also: Malz, H. (1976) Solnhofener Plattenkalk: Eine Welt in Stein. Aha, most interesting! Unfortunately I have essentially zero knowledge of this field, and so simply transcribed the museum's description. It's quite possible that I made a mistake in my transcription, or they may have misidentified the fossil. Please do feel free to go ahead and change the title / description since you seem to have quite good understanding of these fossils. Sorry for my slow reply. I haven't found anything better than "prints", but the word suggests the reproductions in the giftshop. Perhaps "printed artworks"? There's a pretty good article on Printmaking, but it doesn't suggests a single word to cover the multitude of technologies for producing printed artworks. I'm a grafic-designer and presently working on a stamp-design for the 300th anniverary of Christoph Willibald Gluck, the german opera-composer. In this connection I looked for good photos of his bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon. The one I found in your gallery which shows him nearly in profile is the one I like most. I would love to use it in my layout!

And if – there are new questions: The german stamp-design is organised as small invited competitions by the financial ministry. In case my layout will be choosen for realisation the financial ministry will contact you for the payment of the right to use your photo.

Hi there! Thank you for your eagle eye. I'm not a botanist, so what I do is copy down the name recorded on the plant's tag. In this case, I have fortunately kept my original photo of the tag, and its binomial clearly reads: Michelia charlacea B.L.Chon. Looking up Michelia in www.theplantlist.org, which is now my usual way of checking names, I found this: "Michelia chartacea B.L.Chen & S.C.Yang is a synonym of Magnolia chapensis (Dandy) Sima". In short, there may be two errors on the tag: charlacea/chartacea and Chon/Chen. If so, this plant really should be Magnolia chapensis. I am not an expert, and hence not sure of any of this, but if you feel you understand things well, please go right ahead and fix as needed. My apologies for getting things wrong! Hi MPF! I'm a fan of your work, and you know considerably more botany than I do. Since I am not a botanist, I use theplantlist (Kew et al) as my source of taxonomic information. Thus the tree was tagged Acer tsinglingense by the Morris Arboretum, but theplantlist considers this to be a synonym. Here is a pointer: http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl1.1/record/kew-2616602. Excellent, thanks! Before you replied I checked them against the drawings in Flora of China, and they match Acer tsinglingense perfectly while differing from Acer sterculiaceum subsp. franchetii, so the Morris Arb have it as what I already expected. The Plant List is still in an early stage and full of numerous errors and odd results, so I reckon it is best to go with the Flora of China and accept them as different; I'll remane the files accordingly shortly. - MPF (talk) 19:30, 17 February 2014 (UTC)

I think the problem may be the very existence of a single category that embraces both mundane objects and even the highest art of a culture. Contrast, for example Category:Art of France vs. Category:Clothing of France vs. Category:Crafts of France vs. Category:Products of France. I'm not sure what would be the correct solution, but I'm pretty sure that people would be appropriately offended if we lumped all of those under a Category:Artefacts of France. (Also, separate question, why "artefacts" rather than the normal English "artifacts"? Is there a distinction I'm missing or is this just wrong/foreign spelling? Trying to get some clarity before I bring this to the Village pump, which is probably where we should try to build some sort of consensus.) - Jmabel ! talk 21:15, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello again - As may be apparent, I am somewhat at a loss how to deal with these objects. I am taking photographs of items in museums ranging from objects such as mortars/pestles to objects that are very well painted/crafted but do not seem to be intended as artwork for contemplation. Clothing seems easy enough, as do (for example) baskets, and so I just use those categories when appropriate. For what it's worth, I've been wrestling with these questions in museum displays of objects from Africa and North America recently. And finally, I use the spelling "artefacts" because the highest level Commons category (Artefacts) is spelled that way, not because I have any agenda. I just discovered Category:Naupaka kahakai.
I think that Naupaka kahakai is a vernacular name (not a scientific name) for Scaevola taccada. Do you remember why:

• you created Category:Naupaka kahakai (We usualy don't create categories for vernacular name)
• you created Category:Naupaka (It is not a genus, but a subpart of a vernacular name)

Would you mind if:

I am pretty sure

that the sculpture Fountain of Eternal Life (wikipedia link) [1] are copyright violations. I added simlar pictures to the article in 2006 and they wee removed as violations in 2008. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 20:55, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

Here's the investigation I did, which I put into the images that I uploaded: "According to the SIRIS record, the fountain was cast in 1962 and dedicated on May 31, 1964. There is no mention of a copyright notice in the description and thus it is assumed to be public domain in the United States by virtue of being published without any such notice." So it could be copyrighted, but I didn't find any evidence that it was. If not, the appropriate license tag would seem to be: "PD-US-no notice – any work first published without copyright notice prior to 1978." I am not intending to make an issue, I just am a bit pissed off (not at you, your pictures are a vital part of describing the work) because I had maybe hundreds of pictures removed during the first wiki copyright police blitzkrieg years ago and I still can't post something without all sorts of folks showing up, wanting to argue. At that time the need for pre 1973 (or whatever) copyrights to be renewed was not known, at least not by me, so I did not have that line of defense. Also, having been part of the Save Outdoor Sculpture! project back in the early 1990s - the results of which became much of the SIRIS database - I know that a lot of information, such as copyright marks were missed. Dear Carptrash - I know, it's EXTREMELY annoying, a pretty clear case of "guilty until proven innocent". Worse yet, things get deleted before one gets back to the wiki, and that's that. On the brighter side, however, over the years I've taken quite a few photos of public monuments and statues, and have always been pleased to see that "you have been here" before me. It seems that there are only a few of us who are really into having such great public statues in our cities and towns. The SOS project is, I believe, still going on and is looking for folks who are willing to survey sculpture. It is an interesting way to get your work put into the Smithsonian. They are not fussy about picture copyrights, I've talked (written) to them about it and so far no artist has wanted pictures of his or her work removed. I suspect that wikipedia would get the same results but are choosing to take a different route. It is a good feeling to know that someone has noticed my footprints through wikipedia's coverage of American sculpture, and yes, there are not a lot of us. Please change the creative commons license for all images taken of Natural History Museum of Utah exhibits. You are incorrect that the museum allows "photography without restriction". As per its stated policies (https://nhmu.utah.edu/policies): "Photography and videography by our gallery visitors is encouraged. However, all media created by visitors must be for personal, noncommercial use only."

Therefore, any images of exhibits at the Natural History Museum of Utah should be posted to Wikimedia using a CC BY-NC creative commons license.

Plant specimens

Hi, I just wanted to mention that the category "Specimens in Bergianska trädgården" may not be the best choice because the botanical garden has an associated herbarium, and "specimen" generally means a museum (herbarium) specimen, i.e., a dead plant. Californian sword fern image

Hello "Daderot",

i spotted your photo of Polystichum californicum at UV Berkeley Garden. It is an impressing large individual for sure, and current ID may be exactly right, the species may have rather less incised pinnes. For the case this example got aborted sterile spores at time within sporangia, it is certainly the hybrid P. californicum × munitum, with less incised pinnes than usual californicum.

Could you ask the staff of UV Berkeley if someone was interested to check the spores, just a microscope and a few minutes afforded. In case this was the hybrid the ID should be changed, maybe there is already some published binomial for it, i don't know one myself.

Help at Category: Polystichum

Hi again, have corrected several IDs of images meanwhile and added several Categories at specific level to Category:Polystichum. All right so far, but 4 of those were sorted under letter P instead of right place according epitheta. I looked for a chance to rearrange those, sorry too complicated for me at time, didn't know which tool to use :-\ Could you please care for alphabetical resorting, i disliked to mess it up.

Ps: You added Polystichum × bicknellii, photo from BG München, hybrid P. aculeatum × setiferum. This file is named using the letter x, not the crossing sign ×, as i do think might be the preferable choice? The corresponding category is likwise and sorted under letter x at parent C:Polystichum. Thus my question, would it be better to replace all x by ×, or is it likely this might not fit into general usage at commons and cause troubles? As stated above i do prefer usage of the sign in general, however no letter x is allowed, or at least recommended in taxonomic combinations of hybrids. I probably will add further C:hybrids, yet got to know the rules before.

Misidentified plant

Sorry I'm not usually a contributor and don't have an account. I know from looking for other comments about this that you're not a botanist, but I thought you might like to know that the plant in your photo of "Triolena pustulata" is mislabeled. The plant in the photo is actually Pilea involucrata, a plant with somewhat similar leaf texture but in a different family. Hopefully the place it is growing has corrected that in real life.

Bonjour! Merci pour votre commentaire très utile. Hélas! Je ne suis pas un expert en botanique, donc pour moi, je compte sur la plaque d'identification fourni par le jardin lui-même. Pour moi, toutefois, il semble clair que cette plante semble plutôt différent des autres images que je trouve sur Internet.
