Your message to me

Apparently you sent me a message, which I think was this:

"Please don't post messages that are not relevant to Wikimedia Commons. The site does not host articles, only media files such as images, video and audio. Neither should the site be used for chatting, promotion, personal webpages or other such things. For more detail, see Commons:Project scope. Thank you."

It seems to imply that I may have done one of the above, and that a page was deleted. I have no idea what your message means -- but if I broke a policy, I'm sorry. As far as I know the only activity of mine so far was to upload a public domain image of an old painting.

Perhaps you could clarify? Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tbuell (talk • contribs) 00:41, 27 May 2017 (UTC)

You created a personal webpage that had nothing to do with your activity on Commons. These kinds of pages are out of Commons project scope. Your userpage should reflect the areas of Commons where you plan to do sorting work or contribute images. See my userpage (User:Daphne Lantier) for an example. File:Flag of the Bharatiya Janata Party.svg

Hi Daphne Latier. You deleted File:BJP election symbol.svg per Commons:Deletion requests/File:BJP election symbol.svg. Would you mind taking a look at File:Flag of the Bharatiya Janata Party.svg since it's essentially the same symbol and is also the same as the non-free en:File:Flag of the Bharatiya Janata Party.png uploaded locally to Wikipedia. If the Commons svg version is OK, there's no need for a non-free version on English Wikipedia. Thanks in advance. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:56, 27 May 2017 (UTC)

I've deleted it as per the original DR Commons:Deletion requests/File:BJP-flag.svg. Daphne Lantier 22:04, 27 May 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for checking this. I thought there was DR about the flag itself; I just couldn't remember the link. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:20, 27 May 2017 (UTC)

Please, re-store and transfer the files

You deleted files like File:Monument Goncharov1.jpg, File:Memorial plate.jpg, and many others. They were nominated for deletion on May 21, and you deleted them on May 27 before 7 days passed. Therefore, these files could not be transferred to projects where they are used. This is not only a huge disrespect to our contributors, but also incurs irreplaceable damage on many projects, in particular Russian Wikipedia. Please, re-store the files and transfer them manually, because automatic algorithm no longer works in this case. Thank you! --Alexander (talk) 22:09, 27 May 2017 (UTC)

@Atsirlin: I can restore them, but I don't know how to do transfers. My apologies for the early deletion. Being new, I didn't realize a few hours would be a problem. My apologies. Daphne Lantier 22:43, 27 May 2017 (UTC)
@Atsirlin: I've reversed all my deletions and restored all the files in Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Oblam. I've also left a note about the need for transfer. I also marked the 5 images that have been transferred by Atsirbot. I meant no disrespect by deleting these files. Again, my apologies for any confusion or difficulty. Daphne Lantier 23:04, 27 May 2017 (UTC)
OK, thank you. But it will take time before photos can be transferred, because, as mentioned, this has to be done manually. --Alexander (talk) 07:17, 28 May 2017 (UTC)
@Atsirlin: No hurry of course. Let me know when it's OK to close this again, or post at the DR. Daphne Lantier 19:30, 28 May 2017 (UTC)
The files can be deleted now. --Alexander (talk) 22:15, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

Hey wondering if you can send me the details of where this image was from?

I will than follow up with the Indiana University School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology

(talk page stalker) "From en-wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Keratoconus1-800.jpg, a photo of human eye showing typical conical bulge caused by keratoconus. Courtesy of Indiana University School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology". Ellin Beltz (talk) 23:05, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
Perfect thanks. We need a way for Commons to notify EN WP when medical images are up for deletion. Any thoughts?Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 23:10, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
Okay have emailed the University department in question? Have you guys here tried to reach out to them yet User:Polarlys? What makes you think it is not released under an open license? I have also emailed the University of Iowa department of Ophthalmology with whom we work for another image if Indiana does not reply. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 23:18, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
The notification thing has been discussed, but it's a difficult idea considering that 1500 or more images are deleted every day here, and that many images are used on numerous wikis in other languages. I'll let Polarlys respond to the deletion question since you've already pinged them. Daphne Lantier 23:39, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
How many of the images deleted each day are in use by WP MED is the question? Yes not deleting images may require more work but losing high quality images when not needed is harmful to the projects. I will begin to try to find someone to build the tool in question if one does not already exist. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 23:52, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
@Doc James: I have no bot skills. I was just saying I've seen the subject discussed. As for medical related images, I'll skip deletion requests for those if I'm going to have to take all this flack from you about it. I wouldn't want to harm other projects, crappy admin that I am. I hadn't realized WP Med was the center of the universe. If you have any more to say, please direct it to COM:UDEL. I'm not interested in interacting with rude people who give me a hard time. I do my best here, and I do a lot of work. Daphne Lantier 00:02, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

Hello, recently you deleted File:Soldados da FEB no segundo asalto da batalha de Monte Castelo.jpg, but that photo was taken in 1944 in Italy, so according to Template:PD-Italy it's in Public Domain. Then, since the image was taken by brasilian army, please consider also Template:PD-Brazil-media. Do you think it could be possible to restore the file? Thank you for your attention. --Holapaco77 (talk) 21:09, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

There's no information on the file page to back up the date, author, or location you give above. Where are you getting your information about the image from? Daphne Lantier 21:16, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
The tower on the top of the hill is Rocca Corneta in the municipality of Lizzano in Belvedere, province of Bologna, Italy (check here). From there, the brazilian army attacked the Monte Castello in 1944 (see w:en:Battle of Monte Castello). --Holapaco77 (talk) 09:20, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
That's general information, but not direct information about the image itself. I would suggest posting a request at COM:UDEL. Daphne Lantier 18:29, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
This photo was shot during World War II in Italy, 72 years ago. Images taken in Italy became PD after 20 years (see Template:PD-Italy). So, I really don't get the point: why do I have to post a request at COM:UDEL? Commons is full of photos from Italy during World War II. --Holapaco77 (talk) 06:00, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
This was listed as own work by Harry 12345689 and licensed under {{self|cc-by-sa-4.0}}. Again, there's no information about the photographer, the date, or the location. The person who uploaded it did a bad job of it. I don't usually handle images like this, so I'm not comfortable restoring it on my own. At COM:UDEL you can find admins who are more familiar with WW2 images to take care of this request. I'll remind you also that you yourself edited this image on May 7. Why didn't you fix the issues? You were lazy, but you want to put pressure on me and put WW2 in bold like I'm some stupid woman who doesn't know when the war was. I've given you my final answer. Please don't ask me again. Gracias. Daphne Lantier 07:26, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
I beg your perdon, but I didn't want to offend you, really. I'm just proposing that, if you'll restore the photo, I can fix all now: photographer (Brazilian Army), date (29 november 1944) and location (Rocca Corneta, Italy).--Holapaco77 (talk) 15:27, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
@Holapaco77: My concern was that the correct info needed to be added. Since you've promised to address that concern, I've restored the file. Please make the fixes as soon as you can. Daphne Lantier 18:38, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
Done could you check it out if everything is fine now after my fixing, please? Thank you --Holapaco77 (talk) 20:04, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
I don't really have the experience with these kinds of files to say yes or no to this one. If you feel it's well taken care of, than that's fine with me. You've taken responsibility for the image by adding all the info, so I'm ready to move on if you are. Daphne Lantier 20:12, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

User:Вікторія Тротнер(Приймачук)

Hello! Can you please clarify the reason for deleting the information from the user page? There was a biography of the user posted there, including her publications (she is a scientist). I would not have created a page like that for myself, but the user is a newbie and it seems evident that she had to be asked to edit it firstly, besides this page is also a chance to connect with other Ukrainian scientists here, on Wikimedia Commons. Now she is afraid of the project... --Anntinomy (talk) 12:12, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

Read my post at her talk: User talk:Вікторія Тротнер(Приймачук). Daphne Lantier 18:31, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
I`ve seen it. But it is not the answer why you haven`t tried to ask to edit it firstly and delete the page after introducing to the rules. User page was not the only contribution of the user and good faith was evident from Вікторія side--Anntinomy (talk) 10:54, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
The page was a huge 46kb! That's far beyond anything that is acceptable as per COM:SCOPE. How do you discuss changes to something that big? The page can be re-created at any time, just don't re-create the same thing that was deleted. You can put up a small bio, but user pages here are supposed to be related to the user's activity here on Commons; what type of art a user is interested in, what photographic skills a user has, what areas of Commons a user intends to work in, etc. I certainly didn't mean to offend Ms. Trotner, but 46kb user pages are rare enough to be very surprising when I as an administrator come across them. The average size that I delete is between 5kb and 10kb, depending on content. As for her connecting with other Ukrainian scientists, that would be better done perhaps on VKontakte or even uk.wikipedia.org (the Ukrainian Wikipedia), though I don't know what rules the Ukrainian Wikipedia has for user pages. Hello. You're the one that one can always rely on. I need some help about that image:

I have uploaded the second version in which I did small improvments. I'd prefer to keep only this version, to delete the first thumbnail, if You could. Just want to avoid possible vandalism by reverting them in future.

HELP

It is seemingly impossible to create a page/article/reference. I am at my wits end. I have tried it more than once just to have it deleted and some error/filter message. I am trying to post a submission about a Space Shuttle Crew Compartment Trainer. Help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Halloweenknight (talk • contribs) 22:47, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

You're being stopped by a filter (153) that prevents cross-wiki uploads by new users. I don't know much about this particular abuse filter. You can ask the filter's creator Josve05a what he would suggest that you do. Daphne Lantier 22:58, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
I'm not the creator, just the last editor of the filter - Steinsplitter is the creator (and maintainer-ish). @Halloweenknight: A suggestion would be to upload using Special:UploadWizard and then copy the file name to the article, rather than upload the file in a Wikipedia article directly, thereby not having to deal with the filter. First when you've done more than 50 edits (or something like that) to Commons will you be able to use that feature for suspicious (from a technical perspective, not an opinion) files. --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 23:19, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

@Hystrix: I can understand if this is the uploader's own work. That would take care of the copyright issue. But is this person a notable author? If not, this may be simply out of scope. Daphne Lantier 21:50, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
But is this person a notable author? I dont think so. But, the picture is intended to illustrate the work of the Walldorf schools. Hystrix (talk) 22:01, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
And is the uploader the sole copyright holder of the book? Daphne Lantier 22:03, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
That's what I'm expecting. At Waldorfschulen everybody paints his own books. Hystrix (talk) 22:13, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
OK, that's good enough for me. I've restored the image. Daphne Lantier 22:33, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

MOTD

Hi, Thanks for deleting many of the images I have nominated for deletion. File:Mumbai City at 1920s.webm has strong historical education value and I request you to have it somewhere as COM:MOTD. The license review is too pending. Your help will be appreciated. And I wanted to ask Can own uploads be qualified for MOTD myself? Thanking --✝iѵɛɳ२२४०†ลℓк †๏ мэ 02:35, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

I have no clue about MOTD. You should ask at COM:VP. Daphne Lantier 05:57, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

Uhh, the nominator withdrew this and the caption clearly states the rights, so why was this deleted despite there being no consensus or rationale given to do so? Opencooper (talk) 03:01, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

Uhh, he stated that he was withdrawing his nomination "pending further investigations", and you suggest he combine it with other DRs for easier discussion. If the copyright was a sure thing, why is discussion or investigation required? I deleted the file as per COM:PCP. Daphne Lantier 06:03, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
Yeah I was saying it's a sure keep, not a sure delete. The precautionary principle only applies in situations of "significant doubt" and after my keep statement and the nominators withdrawal, there was no expression of that. Opencooper (talk) 13:21, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
Both of your statements at the DR don't reflect what you just said, as I see it. A need for further investigation and discussion, as the two of you commented, reflects doubt, which is why I deleted it. You'll have to take this image to COM:UDEL if you want it restored. There may not be a problem with the copyright, but I'm unsure after the comments you both made about investigation and adding the image to a mass DR. For me, being unsure means COM:PCP, and that I can't restore the deleted image in good faith. Daphne Lantier 18:11, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
Are you really going to tell me what I wrote and meant? I know what I said and it's pretty clear; just because I didn't put a bold keep next to it, doesn't mean it was somehow meaning "delete". "For TechCrunch" means TechCrunch has the rights and that was my whole argument since the discussion revolved around whether TechCrunch could license images with a Getty credit in the EXIF. I didn't doubt it at all, that's why I said "I'm not sure OTRS is necessary" and I linked pass discussion on the TechCrunch issue. I reccomended a mass DR because "they're all discussing the same issue and so the same arguments don't need to be repeated on all of them". Nowhere did I express doubt and the nominator simply withdrew, while if they expressed doubt they would have kept it open.
As I said before, PCP requires "significant doubt". You didn't close this based on consensus or policy, but rather some vague gut feeling. As for undelete, I won't bother. I came to Wikipedia to write an encyclopedia, not jump through bureaucratic hoops. I'm sure you're a great admin, and they're always under appreciated and at the receiving end of criticism, but you bungled this one. Opencooper (talk) 16:29, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

Hi Paul. You have three basic options: 1. Take a photo of the subject with your own camera and upload it at high resolution with metadata intact; 2. Take a photo from a source on the internet that provides the image under a legitimate free license; 3. Go through the process at OTRS with an image taken by someone who would be willing to provide the image to Commons under an acceptable free license. Daphne Lantier 06:10, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

Deleted image - not copyvio

Hi Daphne, why was this deleted? It's a self-portrait uploaded by the photographer and copyright holder User:A.1963. I know, because I was sat next to him at the time. How should it be added to Commons without the risk of it being deleted again? thanks MassiveEartha (talk) 09:36, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

Since this was published elsewhere on the internet prior to the upload here at Commons, the copyright holder will need to contact OTRS and give permission. Daphne Lantier 18:14, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

Wrong deletion about Pr Fox's pictures

Hello,
What I've you done ? Why my pictures loaded since a long time are deleted now, though it is Public domain !?

It is very complicated to contribute with visual pictures on wikipédia ; but I assure you it is a "maldonne" (like we say in French) ! First (about Josephine Baker) are from public notoriety free to use (ex: [J.B. in Washington March] etc.)
And the second choice (Georges Arnaud) is a review of a picture offered by the son of the writer himself. (P.D.) I'll be pleased if you can undelete those contributions (or if you'll do not erase it again, in the case I'll be obliged to re-load them...) Thanks for your attention. --Pr Fox (talk) 13:39, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

@Pr Fox: These were deleted via Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Pr Fox. You claimed these images as your "own work", and now you tell me each comes from a different source and author (which is why we deleted them in the first place, since it's obvious they weren't your own work). Public notoriety doesn't make these free to use. OTRS permission from the copyright holder of these images is needed. If you re-upload any of these three images, I'll be forced to delete them again and block your account, so I wouldn't recommend that you do so. Daphne Lantier 18:23, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
If you look with care, it appears that the pictures are different, before reworking : I just explaned here, honestly, the source I used to create. Then my role was to upload, as I was the only one abble to (somme people does not use internet, and even less wikipedia...) In my country if you execute change(s) to a picture you became "author". Eventualy it is written "D.R." (= Reserved rights). (NB/ "Image Ownership: Public Domain" is written about the Josephine's photo. But probably you are among people who think it is better to show the woman with her bananas-suit, than with the medales she got because of her actions in the Resistance during the war...) I don't thank you.
PS/ I forgot to tell you that I am the webmaster of the official french site of Georges Arnaud that I did with his son, years ago with free pictures - (Actually I am not in contact with him)... --Pr Fox (talk) 14:51, 4 June 2017 (UTC)
Since you've posted this case at COM:UDEL, details should be given there. It's now up to consensus there. I can no longer decide the case all on my own. Daphne Lantier 19:01, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

Hello Daphne, I already did the OTRS permission part (through interactive release generator) on 27/5/2017 for hosting my image https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hair_Transplant_India_Ludhiana_Team.jpg. Once the OTRS permission is processed and confirmed, the file will be restored or an OTRS member will request its restoration. The admin who deleted this image is an OTRS member by the way. I'm not, so I have no access to any OTRS information. Daphne Lantier 04:57, 6 June 2017 (UTC)

File:Mumbai Timelapse - Movement Prevails Here.webm

Hi Daphne, I have nominated this file for deletion because of the copyrighted music. If I missed something, please let me know. It is also possible to remove the sound track and purge the initial version. Not sure it is respectful ot the creator's intention though. Cheers, — Racconish ☎ 09:03, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

@Racconish: Oops, I missed that detail. Thanks for catching it. With all the sites that offer freely licensed music, It's too bad most YouTubers go with copyrighted stuff. Daphne Lantier 18:14, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
Daphne, I have removed the soundtrack. If you agree with this solution, kindly delete the previous versions, edit the file description to clarify the soundtrack was removed and close the DR (please make sure the last version is soundless first as the server as not finished updating). If you disagree, feel free to revert my edit. Thanks, — Racconish ☎ 19:23, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
@Racconish: Excellent work. Thanks. I've hidden the old revisions and closed the DR. If others want the version with music, they can easily download straight from YouTube. Daphne Lantier 19:46, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
Sorry to bother you, but on my computer I still have the sound. Not sure if this is because of the cache. Would you mind double checking yours is soundless ? Thanks, — Racconish ☎ 20:07, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

File:A checklist of amphibians of Kerala, India.pdf

Hi Daphne Lantier, thanks for reviewing File:A checklist of amphibians of Kerala, India.pdf. I just uploaded the image files separately to use in some articles. They are part of the original source; so I think separate review is not required. So I copied the text "passed" under them. Please check and do necessary steps if required: File:Amphibians of Kerala.jpg, File:Amphibians of Kerala2.jpgand File:Amphibians of Kerala3.jpg. Thanks! Jee 03:41, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

I'm not worried about it. If anyone ever has a problem with them, I'll just blame it on you anyways.   Daphne Lantier 04:23, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

Buildings and structures categories

Hi, Daphne. Thanks for helping delete the renamed buildings and structures categories. I'm working my way through them a bit at a time.

I wanted to run something by you. There are a lot of "buildings and structures" categories for properties on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). I'm wondering if there might be more issues with renaming these, since there are so many of them and no separate building or structure cats for the NRHP. I did a little research: the NRHP designates each property as one of several types. Two of the types are buildings and structures (those are separate types). It would make sense to me to mirror the NRHP's classifications (even though it could affect more than the B&S cats), but I'm wondering if making that change would be more disruptive than the changes I've already worked on. What do you think? --Auntof6 (talk) 03:15, 9 June 2017 (UTC)

@Auntof6: I say go with your gut on this. It sounds like a good idea to me. You've got the experience in this area, so I would suggest giving it a bit of thought and then doing what you think makes the most sense. These are images that would be most likely categorized by US editors (we have several mass uploaders who upload American images from Flickr, but who only speak English at a 2/3 level), so it shouldn't be too big of a deal. You do a good and thorough job, so why not do your thing? I can clean up with deletions easily and even restorations and reversals if needed. I noticed you're an admin at SW; I don't know if you've got Help:Gadget-autodel.js there, but it allows me to delete 60+ cats per minute.

Just think of how complex Russian cats are for English speakers. Oblasts, krais, raion‎s, republics, districts, okrugs, etc. It's a maze! So if the NRHP stuff gets to be a bit of a maze, what the hell? Commons is a big labyrinth of category mazes from what I've seen, and it still works good enough for me. For instance, in the US people are catted by "people from", while many other countries go with "people of" or even "born in". I just keep trying till I get the one auto fill-in gives me, or I categorize something and then search in that cat for something more specific, till I'm satisfied. Hi there, I received message informing that the File:RicardoJapinha-Arizona.jpg and RicardoJapinha-CPM22.jpg were removed due to Copyright violation. In fact the pictures were provided by Ricardo Japinha (Ricardo di Roberto), the person in the pictures, who I am helping to update the Wikipedia (https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricardo_Di_Roberto) webpage. He is a Brazilian musician (drummer and guitar player), hese pictures will be used at his Wikipedia webpage. Based on it, can you advise how to proceed to upload these pictures properly in order I can update his Wikipedia webpage at the end? Really appreciate a return. If you need additional information, do not hesitate in contact me.

Hi Daphne, I hope you are well. Could you please explain why you thought this was a copyright violation obvious enough to speedily delete? Thanks, Storkk (talk) 18:25, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

This is a "Cross-wiki upload from fa.wikipedia.org" and seems to be taken up close in some kind of government or judicial venue. Cross-wiki uploads like this are often copyvios, which is why, as you know, we have an abuse filter to stop users with under 50 edits from doing such uploads. This was my thinking as I did the deletion, but of course I may have been too quick on the draw with this one. I notice that my deletion was done in the same minute your replace was done, so I was looking at an old version of the page when I hit the delete button. Daphne Lantier 18:33, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
@Storkk: Please feel free to restore the image. I have no problem with deferring to your judgement if you think that's the right way to go with this image. Daphne Lantier 18:41, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
I was a little irked by the fatuous "no free" rationale given, especially since Modern Sciences has previously been warned about it, and would have preferred a full DR or a switch to a {{Npd}} tag. It is possible that a user with the name of Khoramoffice has the copyrights to the files - I agree it's not particularly likely, but I do think it fails to cross the line for an "obvious" copyright violation. On the other hand, now that they are gone, I don't believe they cross the threshold to be undeleted without OTRS permission, though... so I'm not particularly inclined to do that either. Anyway, I hope you're having a wonderful weekend, and I'm about to sign off for a while. Cheers, Storkk (talk) 18:44, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

OTRS is badly understaffed, so a May 31 permission email might not have been addressed yet. You can post at the OTRS noticeboard to ask about the image/permission you refer to, or send another email to OTRS. I can't restore the image myself because I'm not an OTRS agent, so I have no way of accessing OTRS information or being involved with OTRS permissions. I can only restore an image if an OTRS agent requests the restoration and states they have processed an OTRS ticket for the image or images. Daphne Lantier 21:03, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

Heya. When you temporarily undelete a page, please mark it with {{Temporarily undeleted}} so it doesn't fall through the cracks. Thanks. - Reventtalk 02:42, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

@Revent: I've been using {{Subst:OR|}} at the suggestion of the OTRS members themselves, but {{Temporarily undeleted}} will save me some time. Thanks.   Daphne Lantier 05:43, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, I saw that at UDR, but there is no real need to let a file possibly sit around for another month when all that is needed is just a chance for the agent to look at it... such files don't need that grace period, they need to be either approved or go back on the fire promptly (and, like you said, it's easier...easy is good). I tend to work on the assumption that whomever you might talking to might suddenly go AWOL at any moment, since I occasionally need to do so myself. - Reventtalk 05:53, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
@Revent: I've added it to the three open requests that I did temp restores for. I wish I would've known about this sooner, as it's much faster than the OR template which has to have the OTRS ticket # added. If you see me doing anything else in an inconvenient or mistaken way, be sure to let me know. Daphne Lantier 06:09, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

Spanish Commons page deleted

Hello Daphne, I noticed that you deleted Talk:Portada, the Spanish version of the Commons Main Page talk, maybe because there was some vandalism, but I think I remember it had some valid threads, you may check please the status of the page before the last edit. Thanks in advance, cheers. --UAwiki (talk) 01:24, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

Oh, thanks, I really didn't remember much of what was left on the page, I guess it could have been restored without the bad edits like the ones from Antonioreydi, but there is no problem. I hope we use more that page in the future, and not only to revert vandalism in it. Cheers :) --UAwiki (talk) 13:50, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

Hello, today our Portada (not the talk page) had an arbitrary edit, could you please semiprotect it? Thanks a lot in advance. --UAwiki (talk) 02:13, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

It was already semi-protected since 2014, and before that fully protected since 2009. That semi-protection only gives you 4 days worth of protection before a vandal sleeper is autoconfirmed. I've returned it to full protection. Daphne Lantier 03:50, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

Automated duplicate tags

Hi, I see you are working through this backlog. Please take care to examine the recent duplicates marked as being non-EXIF SHA1 identical, per the comment at Category:Faebot identified identical duplicates and the linked project page. I believe you are the first sysop to start handling these, so any feedback on oddities you find would be welcome. Keep in mind that you may be the only pair of human eyes to examine the image page to be deleted, so your reality check is more important than usual with these. -- (talk) 23:40, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

I rarely see anyone else handling duplicates. But I've got all the time in the world since I'm retired. It's a bit tough to compare some of them because they have a lot of text on the pages, but I'll do my best. It's too bad we can't just dump these with a script or a bot...   Daphne Lantier 23:49, 13 June 2017 (UTC)
One way of making this easier would be to spot a significant pattern. For example, the NOAA duplicates might be a easy decision, to keep all those sourced from the NOAA archive and mass delete the duplicates coming from Flickr. Similar decisions could be made based on sourcing for the DoD images, though there may be issues if the VIRINs are missing for some older files and because the oldest will have dead source links, there will be issues with merging... though with a bit of thought, and for a large enough group, it may be possible to automate some of that merging. Anyway, take you time, the files have been here for many years so nobody is at risk of losing an eye, so have a think if some of this could be smarter.   -- (talk) 23:55, 13 June 2017 (UTC)
@: I wonder if you could run a bot over the versions that are kept when all the dupes (or a significant number of them) have been processed, and make a list or category for any that have dead links or missing info, etc? That would be much faster than physically checking each one as I go. Daphne Lantier 00:09, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
@: One thing I noticeed with File:Fish4367 - Flickr - NOAA Photo Library.jpg is that the file up for deletion is widely used, while the file that's supposed to replace it isn't used at all and is missing some of the source info of the former image. Usually in cases like this, I just reverse the processing and keep the "better" version. Daphne Lantier 00:24, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
Deadlinks - yes I have a routine I have used for something similar, it populates Category:Uploads by Fæ with linkrot. I'm travelling from tomorrow, so today is pretty busy, but could look at this next week.
Swapping the direction is especially relevant for the NOAA images. It would be complex to automate this, and any automation would not be as good as a person making the judgement, as there are several factors when looking at quality of information, usage etc. -- (talk) 09:57, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

File:KrasMapka.png

Hi, you undeleted this file after an UDR. But different from what requester states, a map IS copyrighted. A map is not just data, several choices have to be made, mainly because the earth is spherical and maps are flat. In some maps distances are consistent, in others angles are consistent, in others the map maker tries to balance these aspects. So unless we have some evidence that the map comes from a free source (e.g. OpenStreetMaps), there will be no other option than to redelete the file. Jcb (talk) 22:43, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

Hi, I don't understand why you deleted File:Srinath Singh.jpg because clarifications have been provided about this picture in Ticket:2017040910004101. I thought I have added permission template on this file. See undeletion request. --Arthur Crbz (talk) 07:22, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

@Arthur Crbz: See Commons:Undeletion_requests/Archive/2017-06#File:Srinath_Singh.jpg, where Yann states that the permission is not complete and that more info from the client is needed. Daphne Lantier 17:01, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
OK but the author has provided the information required on 10 June 2017 and the permission is now OK. Should I create a new undeletion request? --Arthur Crbz (talk) 17:10, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
You can do that, or ask Yann to restore it. I can't restore a file where the ticket has been challenged by another OTRS member. Daphne Lantier 17:14, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
The client claims that the picture is from 1995, and I find this doubtful. I would ask the client for a high resolution version. Regards, Yann (talk) 17:58, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

Agree, this was a nice picture of candle rack inside a church. Ellin Beltz (talk) 16:38, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
I wouldn't say it was all that nice. There are quite a few alternatives in Category:Votive candle racks that are much better. I don't think the deleted file adds anything. But I don't really feel strongly one way or the other. If Ellin Beltz wants to restore this, she has my blessing. Daphne Lantier 17:10, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
Hi Daphne, please tell me the the reasons for deletion of this file. I was the uploader of this file, five years ago, What did I wrong at this time, or what has changed now. Thank you. --DALIBRI (talk) 07:30, 18 June 2017 (UTC)
I deleted it as being out of COM:SCOPE since the quality is low, and there are better examples in Category:Votive candle racks. But, as I say above, I don't feel that strongly about it. If the file were to be restored I wouldn't mind, though I don't intend to restore it myself. Daphne Lantier 17:37, 18 June 2017 (UTC)
This rack was significantly different than the others, it shows the storage drawer and is identified precisely to location and is a large photo. I have restored it, thank you for not feeling strongly about it! Ellin Beltz (talk) 19:11, 18 June 2017 (UTC)
@Ellin Beltz: I've seen some editors and admins here get really worked up over files being deleted or undeleted, and I've never understood why they get so bent out of shape over it. It's just an image. Life will go on...   Daphne Lantier 19:17, 18 June 2017 (UTC)
Totally agree! HUGS! Ellin Beltz (talk) 19:18, 18 June 2017 (UTC)

Opinion request

Hi Daphne, hope all is well. Wanted to get your opinion on this [2] where editor Soupforone continues to disruptively edit images that I upload (previous examples include [3]). They requested a change because "The file source does not specify which ethnicity or clan the skull owner belonged to. It just indicates in the original Hausa that it is kasusuwan mutum [4], which translates as "the bones of a man". They somehow missed the remainder of the article as translated by Google. The place of exhumation is Berbera, Somaliland as mentioned in source [5] (per Google translate) "The research team of science have used the shovel to evacuate the tomb and buried many people in the town of Barbera in Somaliland.", as for the ethnicity/clan it states they were Isaaq "But these people are ethnic Isaaq."

Particularly troublesome is their removal of the categories and replacing with 'fossils'. I have already requested AlvaroMolina to undo the move [6], is there anything else that could be done to stop Soupforone from disruptive editing of images? Many thanks. --Kzl55 (talk) 17:32, 18 June 2017 (UTC)

Since I've already had some problems with this editor (here), I'm too involved to take action against him. I would suggest taking any ongoing problem with his behavior to COM:AN/U. Daphne Lantier 17:45, 18 June 2017 (UTC)
I see. Will have a look through the link, many thanks. Kzl55 (talk) 17:48, 18 June 2017 (UTC)

File Mover for CAPTAIN RAJU

Hi, I would like to suggest that you grant file mover permission to CAPTAIN RAJU since you have requested quite a few file renaming according to the policies and I do not see the need to be verifying every one of your requests. Regards. —Alvaro Molina ( - ) 18:36, 19 June 2017 (UTC)

FML

Can you please delete File:Death Traps by Belton Y. Cooper Signed first page(2).jpg under some reasonable rationale. I mucked up and flipped the flier to the part that has the contact details on it. Sorry but I don't now many admins here and we seem to have crossed paths a few times. TimothyJosephWood 01:03, 20 June 2017 (UTC)

File:Ljubljana 1968.jpg

Hi. Why was this file deleted and even without a DR? --Sporti (talk) 05:44, 21 June 2017 (UTC)

@Sporti: The Flickr source being marked ARR confused the reviewer, and I didn't look close enough when doing the deletion. My apologies. I've restored the image. Daphne Lantier 16:42, 21 June 2017 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Shahadusadik

Hello Daphne. I don't understand the deletions. The rappers have articles on en.wikipedia, so the scope is there and there is no social media purpose of uploading... Best regards, --Gereon K. (talk) 18:07, 18 June 2017 (UTC)

I've restored some as being notable musicians. They were all taken with an EOS 60d and are OK copyright wise. The Maccasio files, on the other hand, are small with no COM:EXIF or have watermarks. I'm concerned that these are COM:NETCOPYVIOs. These can be posted at COM:UDEL to get the opinions of other admins, but I don't intend to restore them because of my copyvio concerns. Daphne Lantier 18:28, 18 June 2017 (UTC)

Thank you!

That was a nice surprise. Yngvadottir (talk) 03:47, 20 June 2017 (UTC)

You should stick around. We don't have an arbcom over here...   Daphne Lantier 03:56, 20 June 2017 (UTC)

Redirect of duplicate PSM images

Thanks for your detective work in finding duplicate images in the Popular Science Monthly category. I was aware that some images were reused by the publishers, but being a newbie at the time of the uploads (2011), I had no idea how to handle them. There may be about 5-6 duplicate images, but I kept no track of them.— Ineuw talk 19:23, 21 June 2017 (UTC)

I can't take credit for finding them; I'm just the admin who's been processing them. Daphne Lantier 19:28, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
Thanks anyways, it's a learning experience. I do have a related question. During perusal of images in various categories, I noticed that someone uploaded the same image five times, the difference being the name, and a couple of bytes. How do I bring it to the attention of the commons admins? — Ineuw talk 19:37, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
I would suggest you pick the best one or the one that's used, if any of them are, and tag the rest with {{duplicate|File:Namehere.jpg}} pointing to the one to be saved. That way the other 4 files can be quickly deleted. Daphne Lantier 19:42, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
Thanks.— Ineuw talk 19:52, 21 June 2017 (UTC)

Thanks! :)

Poor old Haggerty. ;) I see there was a wrestler using this name who has an article at en:WP. If anyone uploads a PD photo of him, I hope they'll use his real name. Thanks again! :) We hope (talk) 22:27, 21 June 2017 (UTC)

Felix.kilonzo and friends

You blocked User:Felix.kilonzo for a series of copyvios, for which thanks. Over on Wikipedia we've got a sockpuppet investigation into two suspiciously similar editors. User:Kenyanboystar is one of them, currently serving up a series of copyvio images in the same subject area here. I wonder if you could consider swinging the banhammer over here, too, please? Pinkbeast (talk) 00:57, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

File:Steinar Amundsen 1968.jpg

May I ask you to read the second part of {{PD-Norway50}} and undelete File:Steinar Amundsen 1968.jpg. Thank you. Materialscientist (talk) 07:03, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

@Materialscientist: I've restored it and reverted the delinker. I'm sorry for the trouble. Daphne Lantier 15:21, 22 June 2017 (UTC)
Thanks a lot, I knew that even experienced editors trip over the number 50 in PD-Norway50. Materialscientist (talk) 22:48, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

Deletion of File:WJZ2016.jpg

Hi, I'm trying to determine the reason for the deletion of File:WJZ2016.jpg and its being replaced with File:Wjz-web-logo.png on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WJZ-TV. If the newer version of the logo (File:WJZ2016.jpg) is in violation of copyright then wouldn't the same apply to the old one currently on the page (File:Wjz-web-logo.png)? And what would have needed to been done to File:WJZ2016.jpg to bring it into compliance with Wikipedia's fair use policy on copyrighted logos? Thanks. --Chiklit (talk) 17:24, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

@Chiklit: The uploader forgot to include a license. I've restored it and added the proper license and trademark tags. Daphne Lantier 17:29, 22 June 2017 (UTC)
Got it, thanks. Now that I see it restored it's not even the version I thought it was as the station is currently using a different logo which I uploaded at some point last year. Guess I need to do some more digging. Thanks again. --Chiklit (talk) 17:33, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

Delete

Dear Daphne, could you please inform me why my picture File:Manshour Varasteh2.jpg has been deleted. also the patrol nominated my other pics, it would be so helpful for my further edits to know the reasons. kind regards 15:42, 18 June 2017 (UTC)

{{copyvio|1=Previously deleted. This is obviously not your "Own work". https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=121757507974543&set=a.103395749810719.8876.100004208828399&type=3&theater }} Daphne Lantier 17:31, 18 June 2017 (UTC)
No! Please double check, This picture is very similar but is totally different. that was the Patrol mistake, could you please restore it. Thank you DejaVu (talk) 14:20, 19 June 2017 (UTC)
You uploaded the above image previously as File:Manshour Varasteh3.jpg. That was taken from Facebook, so why should I believe that this one is your own work and not taken from the internet? Daphne Lantier 16:20, 19 June 2017 (UTC)
Dear Dephne , to be honest I do not know to much about copyrights law!, Mr Varasteh is friend of mine I took that pic long time ago (2011) and he used it in his own Facebook page, I uploaded that couple month ago (without knowing about CC ) but didn't have clue. so after delete of that pic yesterday I upload another one which was familiar to that.
Please let me clear myself, my main concern is to be a helpful and good editor more than restore of this pictures. as you can see my edits in other wiki I try to be perfect. so please help me. also other pics of mine which are got nominees they are well known singer pic at 80s and 90s, I scanned the originals and upload. i used UploadWizard for all pictures but after yesterday tragedy I learned to complete all details correctly and study all rules. so please help me to edit my pictures details correctly. so please believe me that I do not want buy credit for my self. and i am sure all further action depend on you to believe my excuse or not. kind regards DejaVu (talk) 19:33, 19 June 2017 (UTC)
I would suggest you start by reviewing COM:CB, COM:NETCOPYVIO, and COM:L. Licenses are relatively simple once you get used to being on Commons. Daphne Lantier 03:58, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
