Picture of the Year voting round 1 open
Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

Hi. I noticed that you have uploaded a number of photographs today around an event that could possibly be considered newsworthy. It would be fantastic to see these pictures used on a WMF project. I would like to extend an invitation to you to visit English Wikinews and include these articles in a photo essay. Examples of published photo essays you can use as a model can be found in the photo essays category. English Wikinews allows original reporting, which means you can write about the event you attended where you took the photographs. This would allow you to get 5 to 20 of your newly uploaded photographs used in one place right away. You can also submit photo essays on Spanish Wikinews (writing guide, example), Polish Wikinews and Russian Wikinews. - I didn't had the time to take a look until today. But you're right, your perspective correction is much better. I think it is a matter of the used software. Until some weeks ago, I was only able to do tilt corrections, now I'm using a test version of DxO with is much better then everything I used before. Maybe I should consider using lightroom, it seems to be able of doing more selective perspective corrections. I'll talk to a friend who uses lightroom during the next days. Re: Two images of greek islands on QIC
Dear Dirtsc, thank you for commenting my pictures. I developed them from RAW and definitely increased saturation and vibrance. I agree that they became way too oversaturated. In addition, noisy sky was pointed out in another comment. I hope to fix these issues and upload new versions this evening; I will drop you a note here afterwards. Hello again. Sorry, at a first reading I thought you were talking about another pair of the pictures I posted at QIC: File:Neos_Marmaras_Bay_01.jpg and File:Neos_Marmaras_Bay_02.jpg. It's them that I fixed today. As for the pictures you mentioned, I also developed them from a RAW file and so definitely increased saturation from the default level in Lightroom (because not increasing saturation at all results in very dull colors), and played with color curves.
It's now hard to remember what the reality exactly was, but I have another picture similar to File:Kelyfos_sunset.jpg that I shot in JPEG rather than RAW. On that picture, the color of the sky and the sea is the same as on File:Kelyfos_sunset.jpg and the greens are much duller. But again, the greens are always too dull if I shoot in JPEG. To sum it up, I tend to think File:Kelyfos_sunset.jpg is rather ok. Perhaps one could desaturate the greens a little bit.
Next, the color curves in File:Kelyfos sunset boat 01.jpg were specifically adjusted to make the sunset more dramatic. Namely, I increased intensivity of light reds. The real sky was less red. I personally find such color enhancement acceptable if it makes a picture more beautiful; however if you disagree I will be happy to know your opinion here or in the QIC nomination.

QIC
Du hast natürlich völlig recht, ich habe bei der Nominierung nicht genau genug hingeschaut. Mag das Bild halt ;-). Das Objektiv ist auch nicht so doll, braucht eher f/11 für taugliche Schärfe. Da ist man aber trotz Sonne bei Verwendung eines Polfilters schnell bei ISO 800 oder höher, wenn man bei 100mm oder länger nicht verwackeln will. Auch ist der Antiwackel bei meiner damals verwendeten k-x nicht so doll, spielt gelegentlich Streiche. Bei dem Rundgang habe ich allerdings ganz bewußt ziemlich viel mit dem Tele in den engen Gassen geknipst und das Weitwinkel in der Tasche gelassen. Inzwischen nehme ich manchmal auch nur die 50mm Festbrennweite dafür, was an der Cropkamera ja auch schon ein kurzes Tele ist. Man muß damit zwar oft sehr viel laufen (Turnschuh-Zoom), gewinnt aber Perspektiven, die keine beknackten Superweitwinkelverzerrungen liefern, dafür aber unnötiges Beiwerk, störende Reklame o.ä. schön ausblenden oder bei relativ offener Blende (das 50er ist so ab f/2 brauchbar, bei 2.8 reht gut) mit Schärfeverläufen arbeiten. Ich kann nur empfehlen, mal längere Brennweiten auszuprobieren. -- Smial (talk) 07:46, 25 September 2013 (UTC) (der sein 12-24mm deswegen aber nicht einmottet)
- Das Motiv fand ich wirklich ganz ausgezeichnet Ich mag solche Detailaufnahmen mit Tele, die sich eine ganz spezielle Ansicht heraus greifen. Hättest du das Bild mit analoger Ausrüstung gemacht, hätte man wahrscheinlich auf dem Abzug gar nichts zu bemängeln gehabt. Heute kann aber jeder die Bilder mal eben auf das Doppelte vergrößern und sieht dann jeden Fehler. Viele Deiner Probleme kenne ich selber nur zu gut. Ich hatte hier auch schon ein Bild nominiert, das in "üblicher" Größe wirklich schön war, beim Review sind aber alle Unschärfen aufgefallen. Ich kämpfe ja selber immer mit der Schärfe und bin da gerade sehr kritisch geworden, weil das hier bei QIC auch immer wieder bemängelt wird. Das ist kein einfaches Thema und ich bin gerade dabei, hier einiges zu lernen.
