Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Sorry, als ich da vorgestern die neun Bilder hochgeladen hatte, da ist mir bei einem einzigen wohl ein Missgeschick unterlaufen. Das lag aber u.a. auch daran, dass man jetzt auf einmal bei Commons nunmehr die Kategorien selber jedes Mal manuell eintragen muss. Früher ging das viel unkomplizierter, da brauchte man nur in das entsprechende Parameterfeld hineinklicken und konnte sich dann dort eine passende Kategorie heraussuchen. Mittlerweile ist das aber wohl nicht mehr so und ich habe nicht den geringsten Schimmer, warum das geändert wurde. Sehr unschön ist es aber trotzdem.

Noch unschöner ist es freilich, dass mir hier ein Roboter-User nicht einmal einen Tag nach meinem wohl unverzeihlichen Fehlverhalten einen solchen Text auf meine Disk hinaufbügelt. Mit ein wenig mehr Zeitvorrat hätte ich meinen Fehler ja gerne auch noch selber ausgebessert, aber so? Wikipedia, wohin gehst Du?. --Eiswind 21:30, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
