Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}

Notification about possible deletion edit

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

File:Colter_bay_boats_20100822_080110_1.jpg edit

Hey there Ed! I was just dropping by the Colter Bay article on en.wp and the photo caught my eye. The image is misidentified. Rather than Colter Bay, the image is actually the marina at Signal Mountain Lodge, which is about ten miles south of CB. Several years ago, I used to head up the HR department for the GTLC. (Colter Bay was my home away from home for four years.) For comparison, you can check out these two images:

Hope this helps! Cindamuse (talk) 12:19, 3 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

It must have been nice being able to spend a lot of time up there. I am certain this is Colter Bay for several reasons. 1) I didn't go to Signal Mountain Marina. 2) I was logging gps coordinates when I took the picture. The coordinates are linked on the image's description page, here's a link to them so you can see exactly where I was standing when I took the picture. http://www.bing.com/maps/default.aspx?v=2&cp=43.903041~-110.644575&style=r&lvl=15&sp=Point.43.903041_-110.644575_File:Colter%20bay%20boats%2020100822%20080110%201.jpg___ 3) you can see more water through the trees. This is consistent with the narrow spit of land in Colter Bay, Signal Mountain doesn't have a similar feature.

For comparison, here are a couple of other images from Colter Bay. They aren't from exactly the same location but they are close enough that you can see some of the same trees. In particular, look at the clump of trees a little to the left of center in this first link. Notice how the one in back is a bit taller and rounded on the top with shorter trees to the left and right in front of it, the one on the left being shortest. If you look at my picture (view the full resolution version) you can find that same clump of trees in the center of the picture.

  • I think it's kinda humorous to see the scenario in full. Here, we have a tourist attempting to provide logistical information about the park and range to an individual who lived there for four years and oversaw training of park and range history and logistics to ensure accurate and consistent information for tourists, employees, wranglers, and tour operators. I've learned that tourists generally hold sentimental value to their visit and experiences in the valley. Their memories are adamantly maintained, however accurate or inaccurate they may be. To dismiss or discredit these experiences may oftentimes only serve to minimize a very personal time in a tourist's life. To that end, I encourage employees to simply reply with statements such as, "Well, I'm glad you were able to experience the park and enjoy your visit. I hope you'll be able to return next year." Then leave it at that. If you ever get back, make sure to visit Signal Mountain. You'll find the best windsurfing conditions in the bay there. Cindamuse (talk) 17:13, 5 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
