First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}
  • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Commons:Help_desk#Uploaded_image_has_lower_quality_than_original edit

@Commons:Help_desk#Uploaded_image_has_lower_quality_than_original - continued here to not spam HD too much. ;-)

Hallo again Encyo, May I ask you to be a bit more careful which files you upload? Some pictures here seem doubtful. See Commons:flickr washing and the evaluation advice at Commons:Questionable Flickr images.

E.g File:Nieuwe Lichting...1949.jpg does not seem to be taken by the flickr stream owner - see his profile picture - looks not like a person who was 1949 old enough to take photographs. Do you have any evidence to the contrary?

File:Swedish military conscription (circa 1918-20).jpg was admittedly not taken by the uploader - and maybe not even my his grandpa as he is in the picture.

The last one File:CenDtoernooi_262.jpg looks okay on first sight - although he does not list the Nikon Cam (see upper right corner on the pictures page) at at his profile page.

I'd like to hear your opinion on those. :-) If you want to you could also answer in German (not sure about your ability). Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:12, 9 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Er sagt hier: "I don't have a working scanner for now, but I have a lot of B&W negatives of old in a box waiting to see the world ;-) Looking forward to post them all... This is all I have for the moment." Wenn ja, was?
Was soll ich tun? Das Bild verweisen?
Viele Grüße, Encyo (talk) 16:01, 9 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Gern geschehen! --Saibo (Δ) 16:46, 9 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
