Wrong city for your Redwood Grove photos

The category Category:Redwood Grove Nature Preserve, Los Gatos, California and all the photos in it have the wrong city. It's in Los Altos. Can you fix? Dicklyon (talk) 04:33, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Hi Dicklyon. Thanks for letting me know. I probably won't get around to it today, but I'll try to do this soon. -FASTILY 08:34, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

File:BigSamHorn.jpg

Hi Fastily. Would you mind taking a look at File:BigSamHorn.jpg. It's not clear whether the uploader and the copyright holder are the same person because the usernames are different. It looks like the file was originally uploaded locally to English Wikipedia, but was then reuploaded or moved to Commons a few weeks later. The original uploader doesn't seem to be around anymore, which means getting them to send a COM:CONSENT seems unlikely. The photo shows up online if you do a Google image search, but it looks like all of the websites using it got it from Commons. Do you think it's OK to assume good faith here or should this photo be verified by VRT? -- Marchjuly (talk) 14:23, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi Marchjuly. Hard to say. Try saying the original uploader's username (PhreddieH3) out loud; one could assume this to be a clever phonetic spin on the attributed photographer's name (Fred Harrington). For reference, the original enwp file description page. My 2c: I personally wouldn't take any action on this, but I also wouldn't !vote keep on it at DR. -FASTILY 21:59, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for looking at this Fastily. My comment about the usernames had more to do with the username of the editor who uploaded or moved the file to Commons. I noticed the similarity between the copyright holder's name and the username of the editor who originally uploaded the file locally to English Wikipedia, but the account that uploaded or moved the file to Commons is not the same. Anyway, I wasn't able to find the file being used anywhere else online and was willing to give the original uploader the benefit of the doubt, but they did also upload File:WRascalHouse2.jpg around the same time (which seems to be more of a scan than photo); so, I just wanted another opinion on the Sam Horn photo. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:43, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

File:Dr G M.jpg

Hi Fastily. Do you think File:Dr G M.jpg should be VRT verfied? Another file of the same person was previously deleted for npd reasons per User talk:Fitindia/Archives/2021/August#File:Dr G M.jpg, but the photo and uploader are different this time. There's no Exif data for the file and it doesn't seem like a typical selfie even if the subject did upload it, but a timer could've been used. A quick Google search of the image to see whether it's been used prior to being uploaded to Commons didn't get any hits; so, I guess it might be OK. For reference, the file is being used in en:Draft:Georgios Mikellides, but that draft was declined the last time it was submitted; moreover, en:File:RTMS Dr Mikellides.jpg and en:File:Dr Georgios Mikellides 1.jpg (one of which might be same as this one) were uploaded locally to Wikipedia but ended up deleted. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:30, 14 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi Marchjuly. Apologies for the belated reply, I don't visit my Commons talk page very often. I agree with your concerns and have created a DR for the file. Regards, FASTILY 08:12, 17 August 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for taking a look at this. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:59, 18 August 2021 (UTC)

Location?

Hi Fastily - could you add the location where you took File:Seagull in flight 1 2020-03-15.jpg, please? Locations make photos much more useful, and help with identification and categorisation. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 15:42, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

File:TERRELL GRICE.jpg

Hi Fastily. Do think this needs to be VRT verified? It seems to be the only file uploaded by this person and the EXIF data seems to imply it's a scan. The same image can be found here on Facebook, but that appears to come after the Commons file was uploaded. Variations on the image can also been found on the subject's IMDb page, but I can't determine if it pre-dates Commons. The image is similar to this one from the subject's Twitter account whicb does pre-date Commons by a few months; so, it's possible it was taken as part of the same photo shoot. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:30, 18 February 2022 (UTC)

Hi Marchjuly. I agree that it is suspicious; recommend tagging with {{subst:Npd}} or sending it to DR. Regards, FASTILY 09:43, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for taking a look at this Fastily. Another editor tagged the file with "npd". -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:30, 21 February 2022 (UTC)

Father uploading young son's artwork

Hi Fastily. Would you mind taking a look at User talk:Marchjuly#Please help me! to make sure I'm not getting something wrong here? I've also gone ahead and removed the file in question from en:Madhubani art, which technically makes it orphaned. Perhaps the uploader would be better off adding it to his user page instead of any Wikipedia articles. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:06, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Hi Marchjuly. Your explanation seems sensible to me. Also worth noting that inserting into File:'Bird's Madhubani drawing' by Harsh Kharya.jpg into w:Madhubani art probably runs afoul of w:Wikipedia:No original research. -FASTILY 08:13, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Thank you taking a look at this. The file was re-added to the "Madhubani art" again by the uploader, but has been removed anther editor. I tried explaining why to the uploader on the English Wikipedia user talk page, and they seem to now understand why the file probably shouldn't be added to that article even if it's licensing can be sorted out. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:38, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for doing that. If they re-add the image, let me know and I'll indef them. Regards, FASTILY 23:42, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

File:OddFellowsBldg.png

Hi Fastily. Would you mind checking File:OddFellowsBldg.png's licensing? For some reason, I'm unable to access the source website to verify the origin of the image. The same editor has uploaded a number of files from the same site and many of them are photos attributed to others. This seems to be the only one with a PD claim, but that claim seems a bit odd for something that is described as being created in 2015. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:06, 8 March 2022 (UTC)

Would you mind checking File:LynnHotel.png too? It's the same type of image from the same source. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:41, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
Hi Marchjuly. This is definitely suspicious, and I'd recommend sending both files to DR. I've also issued the uploader a final warning for copyright violations. Regards, FASTILY 00:06, 10 March 2022 (UTC)

Can you check if these medals were copyrighted?

I had removed these files from the Pan American Games. However, Sportsfan 1234 thinks that I did unconstructive editing and reverted the removal despite the fact that the designs were from the 2015 Pan American Games.

Are these medals still under Canadian copyright laws?

SpinnerLaserzthe2nd (talk) 04:48, 12 March 2022 (UTC)

Just going of a previous discussion about the Vancouver Olympic medals (same country) [1]. Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 05:32, 12 March 2022 (UTC)
I look up the designer, apprently, Christi Belcourt (the designer of the medals) is still alive. They were designed and unveiled in 2015. SpinnerLaserzthe2nd (talk) 05:41, 12 March 2022 (UTC)
Hi SpinnerLaserzthe2nd. These look like derivatives of non-free content (the medals) and should probably be deleted (or at the minimum, discussed at DR). Regards, FASTILY 00:28, 13 March 2022 (UTC)

Sunflower

Is Sunflower designed to upload files larger than 600MB? C.Suthorn (talk) 08:41, 19 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi C.Suthorn. Yes, Sunflower supports chunked uploads. -FASTILY 09:29, 19 March 2022 (UTC)
Every upload of more than 100MB is chunked. But while it was easy to upload up to 4GiB some years ago, at the moment 600MB is a soft barrier, ~1.1GB a less soft barrier and rillke's script the only option to actually upload 2-4GB at all. MW servers send status messages that are helpful to avoid some obstacles and to identify some more, but most tools more or less ignore them. That is why I specifically ask for uploads of more than 600MB. If you want to test the issue yourself, i can provide files of 900MB-4GiB that need revsion upload and files that have not yet uploaded at all --C.Suthorn (talk) 11:22, 19 March 2022 (UTC)
Sunflower does have the ability to retry failed chunks. However, it sounds like you're describing a problem with MediaWiki, which is known to handle large uploads poorly. Unfortunately, without any buy-in from the WMF developers, there isn't much I can do to fix this on my own. -FASTILY 05:38, 21 March 2022 (UTC)

Sunflower localization

I checked the project on GitHub but I see that Sunflower missing localization strings or similar stuff to translate the interface in other languages. it is done on purpose or just overlooked? --valepert (talk) 18:25, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi Valepert. I'd like to do this in the future, but I'm hoping to collect some feedback from the community first before adding new features/functionality. Regards, FASTILY 23:46, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

Query

Hi Fastily. Would you mind taking a look at User talk:Cprice061#File:Bakker Headshot.jpg? File:Bakker Headshot.jpg looks awfully similar to this (minus the color), but the webpage seems to have been updated after the file was uploaded to Commons. Older archived versions of the same webpage show a very similar but slight different version of the photo; so, it's possible they were taken around by the same person as part of the same photo shoot. I asked the uploader to clarify the claim of own work. Can they just be taken at their word in a case like this, or should the consent be VRT verified? -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:41, 20 May 2022 (UTC)

Hi Marchjuly. It's a professional portrait of a (notable?) individual uploaded by a new user with few edits. This should probably be tagged no permission or go to DR. Regards, FASTILY 00:48, 21 May 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for taking a look at this. I'm give them a few days to respond. If they don't, then I'll try one of those two options. -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:53, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

File:Innocence Project founders Barry Scheck & Peter Neufeld, executive director Madeline deLone, and board chair Senator Rodney Ellis.JPG

Hi Fastily. Would you mind looking at File:Innocence Project founders Barry Scheck & Peter Neufeld, executive director Madeline deLone, and board chair Senator Rodney Ellis.JPG? The file's description contains a "email permission" statement that would most likely be OK if emailed to VRT, but probably is not OK simply added as is. I know that way back in the day before VRT, these types of statements were accepted per COM:GRANDFATHER; however, this file doesn't seem to fit into that category. In addition, there are a number of other files uploaded by the same account that have somewhat questionable licensing. For example, File:Ellis2.jpg, File:Senator Rodney Ellis and others, NCSL Bipartisan Bike Ride, Aug 2011.jpg and File:Texas_Legislative_Internship_Program,_Class_of_2013.jpg and File:Texas Governor Ann Richards, His Excellency Nelson Mandela, Dominique de Menil, Texas State Senator Rodney Ellis.jpg. Now, if the uploader is really en:Rodney Ellis, then it seems unlikely (at least I hope it would be unlikely) that such a person would be knowingly be uploading files that violate COM:L; so, my guess is that this is just a misunderstanding. It's also possible that a staff member uploaded the files using their boss's name for the account. It's also just as possible that it's somebody completely unrelated. FWIW, en:User:Rodneyellis was soft-blocked back in 2016 per en:WP:REALNAME and they never seemed to try and get their identity verified. I don't know whether they just stopped editing at that point or continued on as before by creating a new account (e.g. en:User:HC Precinct1). The COI stuff can be sorted out on Wikipedia, but it's the Commons files I'm trying to figure out. I'm also guessing that File:Commissioner Rodney Ellis OCT 2020.jpg was uploaded by the same person. -- Marchjuly (talk) 19:42, 15 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi Marchjuly. I agree with your assessment, the vast majority of this user's uploads are indeed missing evidence of permission and some of them (e.g. 1) are likely copyright violations. That said, I've nominated most of this user's uploads for deletion. Regards, FASTILY 23:27, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for looking into this. — Marchjuly (talk) 10:59, 16 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi there, I see we're back round with this again. Don't mind trying to sort OTRS permission. Would it be possible for you to baby me through the process a bit? It's been so many years since I last had to raise one I've forgotten what to do. Mr impossible (talk) 09:10, 29 July 2022 (UTC)

File:Siglind Bruhn.jpg

Hi Fastily. I'm wondering whether File:Siglind Bruhn.jpg's licensing needs further VRT verification? My understanding is that way back in the day (prior to VRT), it was generally considered OK to post CONSENT-email-type of statements on file pages for verification purposes but that at some point doing so became deprecated in favor of more formal VRT verification per COM:GRANDFATHER. Since this file only dates back to 2010, it would seem to not be covered by GRANDFATHER. FWIW, the uploader of the photo hasn't edited Commons in over a year, but seems fairly active on German Wikipedia, while the subject of the photo appears to still be active on English Wikipedia. So, requesting more formal CONSENT from either might not be a totally unreasonable thing to do. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:38, 12 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi Marchjuly. COM:GRANDFATHER only applies to files uploaded < 2007 so this file is indeed missing evidence of permission. Regards, FASTILY 01:45, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for checking on this. Do you think a DR is needed for something like this or is tagging with {{Npd}} be sufficient? -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:39, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
No problem! {{Npd}} is probably sufficient. Best, FASTILY 05:46, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
You're tagging of the file was reverted. I was going to revert back, but the edit summary that was left makes me worried that such a thing would just start an edit war. Since you're a VRT member, you're probably in a better position to assess whether more formal verification is needed here. Otherwise, either DR or AGF is always an option. — Marchjuly (talk) 22:53, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
You two realize that uploader = author? This is also confirmed in the email text on the file description page. --Isderion (talk) 14:50, 16 November 2022 (UTC)
@Isderion: "Uploader" doesn't always equal "author", and even when it does there is still often the need for more formal email verification via VRT. The quoted email blurb in the file's description appears to be more of a "personality rights" statement for the benefit of the uploader than a COM:CONSENT statement for the benefit of Commons since the subject of the email is not really the copyright holder; if they were, then this wouldn't be "own work". Email permission statements in file descriptions were allowed at one point prior to the establishment of VRT, but after that a more formal verification process was implemented and the copied-pasted email style seems to have been deprecated because there was no real way to verify their veracity other than to just automatically assume good faith. So, if that blurb is claimed to be a CONSENT email, then it should be VRT verified regardless. If it's not, then uploader can simply resolve things by using COM:RELGEN to more formally verify their consent since once again there's no way to verify the email blurb's veracity. The EXIF data looks OK, except that their appears to be some minor discrepancies involving between the date the file is supposed to have been generated and the date of the email, and there's nothing provided to verify authorship or copyright ownership. The file also looks like a scan and is low-res which are also sometimes concerns. Since edit warring over this seems pointless, maybe it's best to discuss in a DR if you continue to disagree. The uploader seems to be still active on German Wikipedia as of about a month ago; so, it wouldn't seem to be too hard for them to either verify their consent via an email to VRT or using the VRT release generator. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:44, 16 November 2022 (UTC)

Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

File:Zanja Madre map.png (edit · last · history · watch · unwatch · global usage · logs · purge · w · search · links · DR · del · undel · Delinker log) I think the source was w:User:Magi_Media. Can you restore it so I may fix the problem.Evrik (talk) 21:29, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
