Tip: Categorizing images
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:52, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

Archaeopteryx
Hello, Funkmonk. Do you remember me?. I was the creator of this drawing of Archaeopteryx. You added the drawing to the category Inaccurate dinosaur restorations. I've just uploaded a new version, of the file, which you can see here. Is it better now? Thanks for your attention
- Hi, yeah, it's actually a lot better. But one thing missing is that it is now known to have had a hyperextendable claw on each feet like dromaeosaurs (though it seems like you've almost done it. Also, the eye seems like it's a bit too far back on the skull, check this: [1] FunkMonk (talk) 18:30, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi,
Could you recognize this dino? DenesFeri (talk) 16:04, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

Thank you very much! DenesFeri (talk) 08:14, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
Hi FunkMonk. Why haven't you moved the file to File:Chilantaisaurus.jpg? --Leyo 23:30, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
- Ah, so Commonsdelinker hasn't removed links to it? The restoration was based on such scrappy material that it was pretty much interchangeable with many other genera, so I modified the file to represent a more fitting animal. Since more was learned about Neovenator since I made the restoration, it ended up being somewhat inaccurate for that particular genus. FunkMonk (talk) 04:49, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
- I do not really understand: The last version of File:Neovenator.jpg seems to be identical to File:Chilantaisaurus.jpg. Is it the case that it is better not to have any image in the Wikipedia articles on Neovenator than File:Neovenator.jpg? Could the usage be replaced with File:Neovenator NT.jpg?
- Even though there might have been a good reason for deletion, the deletion reasoning (“Author requested deletion of page”) was not appropriate or not sufficient. --Leyo 07:35, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, the file could be replaced with Nobu Tamura's restoration (though it exists in most of the articles the other image was in already, so delinking it would be better), and yes, the file was modified some time before the deletion, but I had been thinking of doing it for a while. There's no real loss, rather a gain, since the image is now used to illustrate an unillustrated article. The animals are closely related, so images of them would be interchangeable. As for author request, when did that become an invalid reason? FunkMonk (talk) 16:14, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
- A file that is in use in several articles should not be deleted as an author request (BTW: this reason is not listed for files on COM:CSD), unless there is a legal problem. As you know, licenses are irrevocable.
- I cannot see any gain in having broken image links in several articles. --Leyo 16:33, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
- Again, nothing is lost, because the file is just up under another name, and under the exact same license. Simply renaming the files would have been problematic, because then the file would still be present in the wrong articles, so I thought deleting it would send Commonsdelinker out to remove them, and then the image could be moved to the correct article. But for whatever reason, Commonsdelinker did nothing. Again, nothing is lost, but the red links are unfortunate, but not something I thought would happen. Seems like renaming is better after all. And by the way, this procedure has been done before, this file[3] was moved because the species it depicted was classified as a new genus, this file[4] was moved because the image was completely changed into another genus, and this file[5] was moved when it was learned that another restoration of it had just been made. With no problems, I still don't understand why Commonsdelinker did nothing this time. FunkMonk (talk) 06:09, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
- The reason why I became aware of this image was that a user on de.wikipedia asked me (as an admin on Commons) to check all these files that were deleted on Commons but in use in de.wikipedia and possibly upload them on de.wikipedia if licensing allows.
- To come to an end here, I suggest the following options:
- You undelete the file and re-delete it providing a detailled reasoning incl. a link to File:Chilantaisaurus.jpg. Then, CommonsDelinker will hopefully delink all uses (providing your reasoning).
- You remove or replace all uses manually.
- I undelete the file and start a normal deletion request. A non-involved admin will then decide after one week.
- --Leyo 07:45, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
- I'll replace them manually, no problem. Either with the NT version, or with a skeletal mount if that is already present. FunkMonk (talk) 07:49, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Exact duplicates
There seems to be a mis-understanding of what "exact duplicates" means, File:KingIslandEmu-Keulemans.jpg and File:Kangaroo Island Emu.jpg might be derived from the same original image, but they were certainly not exact duplicates. --Tony Wills (talk) 10:07, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
- As far as I can see, one was a low quality, small resolution version of the other. Only difference was slight tint. FunkMonk (talk) 11:08, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
- Yes it is lower resolution, and poorer quality, but it is a different version. It is not just a pink cast (eg discoloured), the background has been painted pink, also details of the background plants and materials on the ground are different - probably it is a different lithograph. Deletion of images as duplicates is for either exact duplicates (ie bit for bit identical), or images resulting from simple scaling or compression of another image on Commons. Even different scans of exactly the same printed image are not considered exact duplicates. These two images were certainly no where near exact duplicates. If there is a valid reason to delete, a normal deletion process is required. There is no reason to delete similar images, this a wiki, "deletion" just hides the image and means it is still taking up space on the servers but can not be used - doesn't really seem to be an advantage. --Tony Wills (talk) 21:13, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
- Hmm, I assume you're not referring to the actual files you linked to, but to this one?[6] In that case, uploading it was a mistake on my part, because I wanted to use the original drawing, and this turned out not to be it, so I simply replaced it. But sure, it has a valid reason to be here, since it indeed is another drawing and is PD. But again, I did not intend to upload that derivative image in the first place. FunkMonk (talk) 21:25, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
- No, I was referring to the files I linked to (although one is of course now a redirect). In the file that you linked to the two uploaded revisions were significantly different. The pink one was a more finely detailed version, and again a different lithograph made from the same painting. I thought it should be made easily available so suggested the upload be split. --Tony Wills (talk) 06:48, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
- Are you talking about this image?[7] FunkMonk (talk) 07:28, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, that is the one that the page cited as the source, although the later upload over the same file was a different shade, more like [8]. There is a larger scan of that lithograph at [9] (although the quality is no better). But the point is that it is not the same image as File:Kangaroo Island Emu.jpg (even though both lithographs were based on the same painting by Keulemans). --Tony Wills (talk) 10:43, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
- Alright, I was pretty sure they were the same when i did it, my bad. But it certainly needs a better scan to be useful I'd say. FunkMonk (talk) 08:13, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 14:36, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading
Hi FunkMonk, just wanted to say thanks for uploading so many images of recently extinct species and for contacting me about the one of the Bali tiger. Keep up the good work. Peter Maas (talk) 11:48, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
And thanks from me too, for uploading the fossil pics from my Flickr account (you saved me a lot of work doing it myself).--BruceMcAdam (talk) 12:13, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Death-by-raygun 1.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |
