Hello, Gerda Arendt!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thank you edit

Hi Gerda,

I'd like to thank you for your kindness! It is said that a true friend is only seen in time of need, and you proved yourself to be a true friend!

Anyway I came here to share with you this article, which mentions me a few times. It is in German, and I hope you'd be interested in reading it not because it mentions me of course, but because the topic of it is interesting IMO. Best wishes.--Mbz1 (talk) 21:03, 24 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for sharing! Stunning! - If you look at my WP talk/user you see that things worked nice for one of my friends but not (yet) for the other. But the one was already considered "impossible" as you may know, so I keep hoping and don't forget you, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:41, 25 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Some free music recordings I came across edit

Though you might like these, if you haven't heard them already:

CC-BY-SA, mostly from MIT, some of which, like most of Handel's Messiah, we have copied to Commons: https://web.archive.org/web/20050206090542/http://hebb.mit.edu/FreeMusic/

These files from "Pandora Records", all under an "Open Audio License", which is officially equivalent to a CC-BY-SA. And the webhosts officially welcome mirroring by Wikipedia and encourage downloading of their entire archive as long as you do it in off-peak hours; it seems to be available via wget, so downloading and uploading the lot should not be hard to automate.[1] It seems we don't have all their music mirrored yet, too: http://www.ibiblio.org/pandora/vorbis/index.html

Merry Christmas, Gerda Arendt, and all the best in the new year! HLHJ (talk) 03:06, 23 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Notification about possible deletion edit

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Favorite edit

one of your favorite restaurants?Symposiarch (talk) 10:31, 31 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

I like it a lot but too far away to be favourite, - driving is tough after Begleitende Weine - for one special occasion the party stayed at the hotel and went to see St. Stephanus and the Dom the next day - Goldatzel is more practical, once reached by bicycle. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:21, 31 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Do you mean The Geisenheim Goldatzel?Symposiarch (talk) 18:16, 31 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Johannisberg, to be precise. Is there another? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:59, 31 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Category:Choir «Oreya» edit

Hi! This category has existed for a long time and is combined with Wikidata. No need to create duplicates and move files from the old category. --Микола Василечко (talk) 09:20, 5 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Tell me, how would I have found hat category, Микола Василечко? I uploaded files, and Category:Oreya was a red link, so I created it. Only later did I say the other, needlessly complicated name. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:10, 5 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Need to look at the link to Wikidata from local Wikipedia. The link is still on the left in the toolbar. Example: Oreya (Q27659571). --Микола Василечко (talk) 09:11, 6 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
I know that much just tried to explain how I arrived at the category. Other choirs have just their names for a category, that's what I am used to, and perhaps this - using not even the normal quotation marks for something that isn't a quotation - should perhaps be moved, together with the Wikidata, to a more standard name? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:16, 6 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
So. But you need to rename the existing category, and not create a new one and move the files. --Микола Василечко (talk) 09:32, 6 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

I'm getting a bit tire of explaining that for me at the time there was no category for the choir. I was wrong, I am sorry, but it's not that I'd not know I shouldn't create a second one. --
