Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Non-free files edit

I have nominated several of the images that you have uploaded for deletion, on the basis that they appear to have been downloaded from the website of Al Azhar University Gaza [1]. It seems likely that the university holds the copyright to these images, and that you assigned an invalid licence when you uploaded them. If you can provide evidence that you hold the copyright then please give this on the pages linked above. If the University holds the copyright then it could release them under an acceptable licence, see Commons:Licensing and Commons:OTRS, however you may find that the University is unwilling to cooperate.

If you live or work near the University it is probably simplest to take new photographs yourself.

I have not nominated File:New Campus of AUG.jpg because I could not find it on the University's website and because, unlike the other images, this image's metadata suggests that the file came directly from a camera and had not been processed by pre-press software. However, you have marked this file with "Source http://www.alazhar.edu.ps, Author http://www.alazhar.edu.ps". Is this accurate? If you did not take this photograph then please nominate the file for deletion; if you did take it and hold the copyright then please put your name (either your real name or your Commons user name) as the author, and remove the source declaration.

File:Al Azhar Logo.jpg is the University's logo, and if they hold the copyright then this cannot be in Commons. However, Wikimedia Commons and English Wikipedia have different rules, and it is probably permissible to upload this file to English Wikipedia with a "Fair Use rationale", as with w:File:Al-Azhar Logo.png. See w:Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline.

Can you comment on why the logo you have uploaded is in blue while the version that was previously uploaded is in green? Did the University change the logo? Verbcatcher (talk) 23:08, 30 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
