Why are you now uploading grayscale page scans as PNG? It's not really required, and it can create technical problems (See Template_talk:BadGIF). Churchh 14:40, 17 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Image:LesDessousElegantsMars1912.png and others edit

Hi Haabet. You did not provide source information for Image:LesDessousElegantsMars1912.png and several other images which you uploaded recently. It is not sufficient to simply tag an image as being in the public domain. You must say where the image came from and who the original copyright holder was.

We (others on Commons) cannot assume that an image is in the public domain simply because it looks old or has an old date on it. For all we know, the image could've been a recent work of art, intended to look old. Please tag all of your images with the appropriate information. Thanks. ~MDD4696 22:56, 1 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

The law follow the internet-server. And the in USA all image from before 1935 is PD-old.haabet 21:45, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
Yes, you are correct. The year is actually 1923 for PD-old, but that's not what I'm asking about. I was wondering if you could please provide information on the images themselves, such as who the publisher was or where you obtained the image. It is helpful to provide some information on what the image is, so that others can verify that the image is indeed PD. I do not know anything about your images, and there was nothing on the image description pages to help me learn what they are. ~MDD4696 01:25, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Why did you remove my comment and call it vandalism? I brought up a valid concern, and I would appreciate it if you would address the issue. What's the problem? ~MDD4696 18:03, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
because it is vandalism if you remove the Category:Brassiere from a brassiere illustration.

haabet 21:45, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you are talking about... perhaps you've mistaken me for another user? If you look at the history for Image:LesDessousElegantsMars1912.png you'll see that it was never in that category. ~MDD4696 01:25, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Editing my PNGs edit

Why are you now editing my previously-uploaded PNGs? You haven't shown conspicuous prowess as an image editor in the past, and you didn't provide an explanation for your actions, and the first one I looked at (Image:1913-Dictates-of-Fashion-Calvert-Life-cartoon.png) was not improved by your editing (compare the hair of the woman standing to left of center in foreground in your version vs. my version to see what I mean), so I just reverted all of them. Churchh 08:40, 2 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Can you scan the image in a higher resolution?haabet 12:58, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
I scanned it from a library book several years before Wikimedia Commons even existed. At the time, 830x667 seemed quite adequate for a web-page graphic.
I know I've edited a few of your graphics, but it was always for one of two simple reasons: 1) To reduce the size of the image so it will display in the Wikimedia GIF/PNG resizing software (i.e. size of the unthmbnailed image must be reduced below about 3400x3400 pixels), or 2) To change the "ink" color from gray to solid black. In the images you recently edited, I didn't see any such obvious motivations, nor any clear improvement in image quality. If you want to make substantial edits, please upload your new edited version under a different name (as I did with Image:Mercure_des_salons_1830-enh.jpg, Image:Fashion_1796-enh.jpg, and Image:Marie_Antoinette-children-1785-6-Wertmuller.jpg... Is that even really a corset? It looks to me like a padded/quilted undergarment whose main function was probably warmth... Churchh 15:29, 12 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

A corset in that era was a armour, on the body. Corset mean body or body clothing in old French. The image is from a old French encyclopedia. I think the old French encyclopedia is wrong, as the image is a Corselet, and Corset vas a armour of plates. But I am not French as I do not like to change a French encyclopedia about thing of old French subject.18:48, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

"True life" tight-lacing experiences edit

I'm afraid that the letters of "true-life" tight-lacing experiences published in Victorian scandal rags could be the Victorian equivalent of the letters detailing "true-life" sexual experiences published in the back of 1970s girlie magazines -- I really wouldn't put too much trust in the veracity of either type of letter (and in both cases, some of the "letters" probably weren't letters from ordinary readers at all, but were pieces of pure hack-fiction commissioned and planted by the editors). I know nothing about the Family Doctor and People's Medical Advisor, but it's very obvious that if the issue price was one penny, then it wasn't a real professional medical publication at all... Churchh 07:14, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

The veracity of The Family Doctor is the Sexual fetishism in The Victorian Era. The letters from The Family Doctor is reprinted often, first reprint about 1890. The tight-lacing is a sexual fantasy. I Think The Family Doctor was a one-man firm. Two of the anonymous writers been married, but how they meet? I think least the one was the editor. haabet 14:45, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

That's a book published in 1907 outside the U.S. If it were published within the U.S. in 1907, then there would be no question that it was now Public Domain. However, since it wasn't, the general rule which applies is 70 years after the author's death. However, if there's no author listed, then this rule is of course difficult to apply, and it may in fact be a work of collective corporate authorship. So technically you would have to find out what the rules are governing copyright of works with collective corporate authorship. However, in my personal opinion, there should be little real difficulty in using scans from that work on WikiMedia Commons. Churchh 14:10, 25 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Haabet, drawings or caricatures of handsome women coquettishly displaying a well-turned ankle as they get into or out of a carriage, or of men helping handsome buxom women in off-the-shoulder gowns into or out of their outer wraps, are simply not "porno" in any ascertainable meaningful sense. Such illustrations appeared in the pages of moderately respectable magazines which were openly advertised and sold above the counter. Pornography was rather more explicit, and with different and more furtive distribution channels in most cases. Churchh 23:20, 5 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for providing images to the Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on the Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikipedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best use CommonsHelper
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

A book is not a corset edit

Hello,

The subject of Category:L'éducation Physique Féminine is a book, and this book don't mainly deal with corsets. So, your edit (categorization in Category:Corsets) is irrelevant. Each picture have to be categorized according its own features, and you must assume that every picture in Category:L'éducation Physique Féminine is correctly categorized. A category never inherits features from its contents. --Juiced lemon 16:01, 22 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I believe JL is correct here, this book-category should be included (as a subcat of) category:Corsets only if the book solely deals with corsets, which appears not to be the case. Corset realted images from this book should therefor be in both Category:L'éducation Physique Féminine AND a relevant corset-category. The edit JL pointed out above will therefore be reverted, but I'll await doing so until you've had a chance to express your opinion on the matter. Thanks for uploading Image:10mmSpiralStay2400px-inch.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). Hi, and thanks for your contributions to commons. Could I ask you to provide an English translation on this page? I'm sorry for the hassle; however, I cannot read Danish even a little bit. Thank you. Patstuart 17:11, 8 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

It is hard to translate a old joke. The woman wake her husband, because she search for her wedding ring. Point is: She have need of the wedding ring to sleep, because is in that era was wrong if a woman as sleep together by a man without a wedding ring. In this groups you can ask for the text and Point, ask for several translation:

Sourcing on Image:Barcley custom corsets04 .png e.a. edit

Hi. Could you please source your uploads a little better? On Image:Barcley custom corsets04 .png you source it A catalogue from 1927. That will be very hard to verify. Please add more detail. Cheers! Siebrand 06:17, 12 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

It is not possibly to verify when I put old rare catalogues on wikisource, but what can I do?haabet 21:50, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
Well, you could for example scan the first page and the page with the copyright. Then you can upload those. On your scans from content pages you can refer to those pages and you can clearly identify the page the scanned image was on. Please take responsibility for this. Cheers! The effect of corseting edit

I notice that on a couple of the images, you have remarked that the narrowness of the ribcage relates to the way in which the skeleton has bbeen handled after death, rather than deformity due to corseting.

Yes; of that cause the ribs been connected by wire on skeleton. But the ribs of female is softer than the ribs from men, as the woman do not been choke by four children in midriff.haabet 16:08, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
No; but boys and girls use the same clothes to that age when the boy begin to ride a horse (about 6-7 years). The advertisings tell as the upper-class girls use a specially corset for beginners, at age 6 to 18, normally 15, by the confirmation.haabet 16:08, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
  • The shape that the female form took on is dependent on the desired effect. Some corsets simply pulled the waist in, but others compressed the whole lower thorax.Mandy 10:56, 26 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
No, The normal common corset was a belt by extreme broad edges. The upper-class had lengthen waist from the use of the specially corset for beginners. And some woman had serious problem because a dressmaker not was a corsetmaker, when he copy a corset for lengthen waist to a beginner.

Mind your manners, Haabet. You should assume good faith and not call such edits as Tano4595 recently has done "vandalism". Furthermore you should follow Tano4595s advice and read the page about over-categorization. I agree with the edits Tano4595, but will not re-revert - this time. Regards, Finn Rindahl 21:32, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Med vennlig hilsen Finn Rindahl 16:32, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello Haabet!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichill (talk) 12:47, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Haabet!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Coronet Corset Co.gif edit

Haabet, no matter how many entries are listed in the image "palette", there are still only six distinct shades in that image -- and two of these six serve little or no useful role in the overall image. I'm not aware of any evidence that a full grayscale palette did anything to aid resizing of GIF images when that was allowed, and it certainly doesn't do anything to help using large GIF images in articles now, when GIF's are not resized. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content, Marriageable girls, was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. Category:Silk in satin weaving edit

Dear Haabet,
I would be very grateful to you if you could kindly answer the following question: how can you tell that the glossy fabric is indeed a satin-weave silk? Thank you.

--Thorvaldsson (talk) 19:13, 17 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have collections of fabric samples from that era and later. The word "Satin" in picture text in that era means satin-weave silk. Would you believe me?haabet 22:55, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
I completely agree with you, dear Haabet. However, looking at the lithographs alone, except ‘Hornet’ perhaps, it is not so obvious that the glossy fabric is satin, rather then silk or silk satin.
Since ‘Category:Silk in satin weaving’ combines silk (fabric) and satin (technique), I would suggest:
to add ‘Category:Satin’ to ‘Category:Silk in satin weaving’;
to rename ‘Category:Silk in satin weaving’ into ‘Category:Satin-weave silk’ or even ‘Category:Silk satin’;
to add all content of ‘Category:Satin clothing in art’ to ‘Category:Silk in satin weaving.’

Commons page Domestic servant edit

I noticed that you added "manor shooter" as a category of domestic servants but unfortunately I can't figure out what you mean. So could you please describe the type of job a "manor shooter" would have so that we can get the proper English word for it. Feel free to describe it in Danish if you're more comfortable with that, because I have no problem reading Danish (I'm not Danish though...). Thomas.W (talk) 22:20, 2 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

I noticed that you removed your own additions to that page so it probably doesn't matter anymore, but what you probably meant by "manor shooter" is gamekeeper. But gamekeepers are not domestic servants since they don't work within the household, nor are bailiffs or coachmen domestic servants. Thomas.W (talk) 15:07, 3 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Huslærer (house teacher) was a Domestic servant
  • Amme wet nurse was a Domestic servant
  • Kusk coachman/driver was a Domestic servant
  • Karl man, guy, farmhand was a Domestic servant for the horses.
  • Syerske seamstress was a Domestic servant

haabet 23:08, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

  • selvskabsdame company lady.haabet 15:47, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
You seem to have misunderstood both domestic and servant. Domestic servants worked, and to a lesser extent still work, in the household, that is in the house where the family lived, and were servants, putting them at the lower end of the social ladder. As an educated person a governor/governess (huslærer) would have a higher status than a servant and a farm hand (karl) worked in the stable and not in the household, as did a coachman. And very few, if any, families would have a full time seamstress (syerske). To give you a starting point housekeepers (hushållerska), maids (tjenestepige/husassistent, hembiträde) and cooks would be typical domestic servants. Thomas.W (talk) 09:38, 4 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Here is a cultural difference. Few Danish servants slept with lords, it was only the butler. But the servants ate almost the same food as their lord. For that they could not complain about the food. From 1660 it was normal in Denmark, the service people could read and write. The seamstress was hired for a period before the party. It was hand sewing so it took a lot of time. haabet 15:47, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
I choose not to comment on Danish lords sleeping with their butlers since doing so would be taking cheap shots, but a lady's companion (selskapsdame) was not a domestic servant either but always of high social rank, usually equal to that of the lady they were hired to keep company, and would never be expected to do domestic work. PD because heirs dead edit

Could you clarify the copyright-legal basis for "In all countries his photo is PD because all heirs are dead."? That is not a default assumption for en:orphan works. This particular person appears to have published in multiple countries, and I don't see any US or EU law that makes orphan==PD. Instead, they are either completely restricted, or else allow limited use. DMacks (talk) 02:51, 21 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
