Category David Ross Locke

Hello HelenOnline, would you do me a favor and check my creation of category "David Ross Locke" please? It's my very first category (yay) on Commons and I don't want to screw it up. (And how do I link a category?) GermanJoe (talk) 17:13, 14 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

I added his authority control code and defaultsort parameters. You could also create and add a creator template for him like Creator:Thomas Nast. To link it to Wikipedia, click on the Add links pencil on the bottom left of the page, type en for language and then the name of the English article, then click on Link with page. HelenOnline 17:31, 14 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your help. Will try the template, when I got some time later. GermanJoe (talk) 17:37, 14 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Creator:David Ross Locke created - would you mind having a second look please? I have no idea, what to do with the long list of different authority IDs and the "Wikidata" parameter. Aside from those 2 points all other fields were pretty self-explanatory. Many thanks for your help with this. GermanJoe (talk) 21:18, 14 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
No problem. I changed the format of the dates to the format supported by the template. It is not necessary to include all the authority IDs as long you have the centralised VIAF ID, but I have found and added all the main ones. The Wikidata parameter is the ID for his Wikidata page which stores his Wikimedia links (I added the new Commons category to it yesterday via the Commons category sidebar). You can find a guide to completing the creator template at Template:Creator. HelenOnline 07:37, 15 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks

Hello Helen,
thanks for checking the challenges! I was really relieved when I saw your edits, as I was missing your eye for mistakes and ambiguities... and thanks for noticing my copy-paste-mistake with november/december! I think the Persian is now also correct (I made a search for 'دسامبر' = 'december or however they call the month' and 'november' and found only one that I changed - apparently they don't flex it or I would never have found anything... ;->).
About the long introduction for Bad weather: What do you think of adding a short sentence (as we usually do) similar to ...featuring Bad weather in all its ugly glory (or simply uglyness) - no sunlight, lightning or rainbows allowed!
Anna reg (talk) 12:06, 30 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

No problem. Bad weather doesn't really apply here this time of the year.   I say keep it short and unambiguous, and specify any exclusions explicitly. HelenOnline 12:12, 30 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
I was afraid of that - no rain at all for you? (I'm just nestled into some blankets before my computer as I caught a cold a few days ago...) At least the other topic is possible for everyone...
short and unambiguous (so that people will hopefully read it ;->) is the main reason why I'm not that happy with the description as it is - but I'm not sure if I should change it now, as it's already translated into French and Persian; Einstein and Mykola on the other side seem to be waiting if there will be changes coming (I warned them that I'd like a check)...

Template:Photo challenge rules

Hello Helen,
I forgot to change the third sentence in checklist for our experiment with adding pictures at the top (at the moment it's creating a mess ;->). Could you change the Afrikaans? (Shouldn't be hard to set back if we decide against continuing the new system)
Best wishes, --Anna reg (talk) 22:39, 5 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

January theme

Hello Helen,
I'm just preparing the new January theme and the watchlist message - seems as if we won't have themes for voting next month. On the other side, there's once again a problem with the translations of the two month-text for {{Photo challenge rules}}. I'm not sure if I'll have time to look into it, as I'll probably only return home on the 31st.
Best wishes, Anna reg (talk) 19:48, 26 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

My brain is a bit slow today figuring out what if anything needs to be done to the templates but I will get there eventually. I undid this change of yours to the template as it is unnecessary and you did not change all of them so I thought it might be confusing to others reading the code. The year is only there to prevent the function from using a default current date which can throw out the translated months. We might even be able to leave out the year altogether. HelenOnline 12:02, 27 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Anna and WikiPhoenix I think we need to merge Template:Photo challenge rules and Template:Photo challenge rules restricted. There seem to be unintentional discrepancies that have developed over time as they are not necessarily being edited by the same people in exactly the same way and it is a duplication of work whenever changes take place. We can add a line at the bottom to say that photos can be taken earlier in the same way as we add the time restriction. HelenOnline 12:45, 27 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Anna and WikiPhoenix above prompts probably didn't work as I forgot to sign my post. HelenOnline 12:46, 27 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Here is a draft sentence (unlikely to be perfect):
  • Photographs may have been taken earlier.

Code: {{LangSwitch |af = * Die foto's kan reeds vroeër geneem word. |de = * Die Photos dürfen früher aufgenommen worden sein. |en = * Photographs may have been taken earlier. |es = * Las fotografías pueden haber sido tomadas antes. |fa = * ممکن است زودتر گرفته شده باشد عکس. |fr = * Les photos peuvent avoir été prises plus tôt. |hu = * A fényképeket korábban is készülhettek. |it = * Le fotografie possono essere state scattate prima. |pt = * Fotografias podem ter sido tiradas anteriormente. |ru = * Фотографии они сами могут быть сделаны и ранее. |sv = * Fotografierna kan ha tagits tidigare. |uk = * Фотографія могла бути зроблена раніше. }} HelenOnline 13:23, 27 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

I have tried to synchronize the two templates as far as possible without changing how they were intended to be used. I still think we need to merge them to avoid future problems. HelenOnline 17:10, 27 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Good idea & thanks a lot! ;-> I'll try to have a look tomorrow. Good night, Anna reg (talk) 23:08, 27 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

February themes

Hello Helen,
I just prepared the two February theme pages

and - as February has already begun and the pages are therefore already linked from the Photo challenge-main page, I put <!-- --> around every untranslated language - so if you found the time to do the translation, please don't forget to remove it!
The watchlist messages are once again in preparation in your sandbox, but so far I have mainly actualized the links...

Robben Island

Dear HelenOnline

I am preparing a 3rd edition of How Can Man Die Better, my biography of Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe. I have come across in Wikimedia Commons your outstanding picture of his quarters on Robben Island and am interested in reproducing it. As I am not sure to what extent the picture is copyright free I am writing to ask if I can reproduce it and if so, with what attribution.

I shall be glad if you will write to me at: pogrund@gmail.com

Many thanks

Photo challenge translations - March

Hello Helen,
the photo challenge translations for March are ready! Here are the links:

Best wishes, Anna reg (talk) 12:35, 27 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Please can you help translate the restriction for the black & white challenge: "The photos must be taken in March 2015 and a maximum of three entries can be submitted per photographer.". Sorry for the late change. Thanks. -- Colin (talk) 10:20, 28 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

I have also amended the description to be clearer: "black & white photography (not a colour photo of a black & white subject)". -- Colin (talk) 10:23, 28 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

I have clarified (with examples) that Commons:Photo challenge/2015 - March - Steps, Stairs and Staircases includes ladders and step stools. -- Colin (talk) 10:27, 28 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

April photo challenges ready for translation

Hello Helen,
the April challenges are hopefully ready for translation! Here are the links:

I'm preparing the new watchlist message in your sandbox - as always... Thanks for your help, Anna reg (talk) 07:43, 31 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Commons:Photo challenge-translations May

Hello Helen,
the challenge pages for May are ready for translation:

FRacco created some translation templates for the photo challenge and formulated a Translation Plan - perhaps you could have a look (e.g. the new watchlist message is using one - the translated theme names have to be added to Template:Photo challenge theme/i18n/Mother Nature Strikes Back and Template:Photo challenge theme/i18n/Panoramas).
Best wishes and thanks for your help!

Commons:Photo challenge translation - June

Hello HelenOnline,
we are really late this month (I didn't have much time), but the challenge pages for June are:

The new templates are therefore {{Photo challenge theme/i18n/Collections, Collecting and Collectables}} and {{Photo challenge theme/i18n/Eyes}}. Oh, and the challenges are both restricted to June and 4 pictures per user - the sentence is added after the {{Photo challenge rules}}-template.
Best wishes, --Anna reg (talk) 23:01, 1 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Commons:Photo challenge translations - July

Hello HelenOnline,
the pages for July are finally, finally ready for translation:

The title translations are therefore {{Photo challenge theme/i18n/Food production and processing}} and {{Photo challenge theme/i18n/Unfamiliar Vehicles}}.
I removed the time restriction from last months restriction (time and pictures per user) - please check that I didn't delete anything wrong...
Best wishes and once again thanks for helping!

Commons:Photo challenge translations - September

Hello HelenOnline,
I didn't manage to do any notifications for August (I hardly participated in the challenge preparation), but I have some news for September:
The new challenges are

The title translations can be found under {{Photo challenge theme/i18n/Fossils}}, {{Photo challenge theme/i18n/Fountains and wells}} and {{Photo challenge theme/i18n/100 years later}}.
Oh, and we have a time restriction for September for Fountains and wells - please check the text!
Best wishes, --Anna reg (talk) 00:39, 30 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

As Mykola Swarnyk asked about the August translations, I realised that it's perhaps a good idea to give you the links for the theme name templates - after all, they will be used in the watchlist notice for September (voting pages): {{Photo challenge theme/i18n/Reptiles and Amphibians}} and {{Photo challenge theme/i18n/Personal Protective Equipment}}.
All the best, --Anna reg (talk) 08:00, 30 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

November Photo Challenge

Sorry I didn't get organised enough with the October challenge themes. I've proposed a couple of themes for November and it would be good to agree and translate these + watchlist soon. Hope you can help. -- Colin (talk) 20:40, 28 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Photo Challenge

Hi Helen, Hope you are well. Missing you on Photo Challenge. I see you've been off-wiki for a while but hope you can find time to take part in the photo challenge and help with organisation. It would certainly help me to have others to help make decisions about themes and organise translations. Hope to see you around. -- Colin (talk) 22:43, 29 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Blue Jay

I put a category Blue Jay (1989) under an image, File:Blue Jay 1.jpg but found it empty with a remark. Then I remembered a discussion about this ship, but don't know the results anymore. Do you remember what was wrong? See this --Stunteltje (talk) 19:05, 1 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Offhand I think it is because people are mixing up different boats with the same name. If you look here it is not based in South African waters. HelenOnline 14:08, 2 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
You are right. That was the problem. I refrain of categorising the ship by year and registration. --Stunteltje (talk) 14:41, 2 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Category:Chilli_bites

Chilli bites has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
