These documents are not your own work, see COM:DW. Most of them should be OK, but proper license and information needed. You have one week to fix that, after which they may be deleted. Please ask if you need help. Regards, Yann (talk) 16:18, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

Hello Huddyhuddy,

Can you help with this and File:1940 issued visa by consul Sugihara in Lithuania.jpg. Can you tell us the nationality of the passport owner. -- Geagea (talk) 07:22, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi Geagea,

Yes, the holder was Czech and used his Czechoslovakian passport, issued to him in 1938. He managed to escape to Poland in 1939 and from there to Lithuanian. In 1940 he received the Visa from Sugihara, using it to travel via Siberia to China.

--Huddyhuddy (talk) 07:26, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

It was hepfull. Thanks. -- Geagea (talk) 12:24, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Crossing the border at Zalishchyky into Romania on 15 September 1939, 2 days before the Soviet invasion from the east - passport.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

License templates for your uploads

Neil, Thanks for sharing your collection, I also scanned and uploaded several WWII documents (see Category:Scans by Jarek Tuszynski). However you will need to start paying attention to the license templates and if you want your files to be found by others you will also need to start adding categories. I added license templates and categories to several of your files (1, 2, 3, etc.). For licenses many of your uploads fall under {{PD-text}} or {{Anonymous-EU}}, some might fall under Category:PD-EUGov license tags licenses, some {{PD-signature}}, etc. None should be under CC license or without any license templates as that would suggest you created the document. You might also find Commons:Copyright rules by territory useful. You should look through your uploads and correct the licenses the best you can. For Categories you should at least find for each file the best subcategory of Category:Identity documents by country. Also when you leave message for me or other people, click "Add topic" link on top of the page to place the message in the right place otherwise it is hard to find. Please let me know it I can help you more and thanks for sharing. --Jarekt (talk) 04:33, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi Jarekt,

Thanks for the reply.
That's looks very complicated 8( all them licenses, how does one change them?
Many many thanks for the reply,
--Huddyhuddy (talk) 06:23, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
Yes it is complicated and all of us that have been around Commons for a while know much more than they want to about copyright laws. You seem to pick particularly tricky area, since each document is from a different country and might have different potentially copyrighted elements: writing, coats of arms, signatures, ID photographs, etc. Most people start with their own photographs of non copyrighted objects (where they can use CC licenses) or set of photographs that follow a single PD license. You can change a license by clicking "Edit source" and typing "{{PD-text}}" in the wiki-text description. --Jarekt (talk) 13:36, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi again, Well, true, all the items I have collected come from many places and countries: many Jews arrived in British Mandate or after the forming of Israel and brought with them documents & passports from all over. The issue of placing the right license keeps getting more and more complicated 8( --Huddyhuddy (talk) 15:39, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

File:Life saving visa issued by Dr. Aristides de Sousa Mendes in June 19, 1940..jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Hey

PLEASE do not upload images as "own work" unless they are actually your own work. Scanning in a document from your collection does not make it "your own work".

Stating that an old passport is your own work because you scanned it in, is false. It is incorrect. The only reason I wouldn't call it a lie is because I trust that you didn't actually intend any deceit. You simply misunderstood. That's the same reason you've been stating that decades-old documents were created on the day you uploaded them. That's not what "creation" means.

I'm fairly certain that all of these documents are public domain anyway, by virtue of being government documents, so that probably won't be an issue.

Yes, it will be inconvenient to have to fix all of your incorrectly-labeled uploads. But at least now you won't keep making that same mistake, over and over and over and over and over.

You didn't know any better. And now you do. DS (talk) 16:16, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

Hello,
Thank you for the update.
No, did not know this.
Please let me know how I can then upload images from my collection properly, thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Huddyhuddy (talk • contribs) 10:34, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

The simple part: "Date" should be "the date on the document", and "Creator" or "Author" should be "the government that issued the document". The complicated part: different countries have different rules about copyright on documents like this, so there's no single answer. I would recommend asking on COM:VPC - provide detailed descriptions of what the documents are, including when they were issued and by what nation. I am confident that at least some of them are okay; I don't know if they're ALL okay - some might need to be deleted, unfortunately. Please don't upload more of them until we've got the copyright stuff straightened out, okay? DS (talk) 17:50, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
Hello again,
I was uploading images from my collection because I believe in sharing historical material so others can learn about the past. "A picture is worth a thousand words" as the saying goes.
How can I do this with this request here from above? what do you mean by "straightened out"? how long? most of the regimes do not exit anymore or have changed, most of the items I share are from 60-100 years ago, no modern country and I do not think anyone from back then would mind if a collector is sharing an image...how can we solve this? how can we proceed? thank you for your patience. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Huddyhuddy (talk • contribs) 23:24, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
" I do not think anyone from back then would mind" - unfortunately, check our guidelines on the precautionary principle. We have to do this properly. It all depends on the country that the documents come from, even if the country no longer exists. For instance, all Ottoman Empire documents are 100% public domain, as per Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Ottoman Empire. I think it is a reasonable conclusion that all documents made by (Country X) will be under the same copyright conditions, so please ask about this on COM:VPC. Thank you for understanding. DS (talk) 17:29, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

Your nomination has been reviewed and promoted
Congratulations! The image you nominated was reviewed and has now been promoted as a valued image. It is considered to be the most valued image on Commons within the scope:
Interior pages of passports issued by the 1939–1945 Slovak Republic.
If you would like to nominate another image, please do so at Valued images candidates.

This is largely but not completely accurate (and you absolutely shouldn't label them as "own work"). Different nations, different copyright rules. Verify first. 19:55, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

NOTICE

Please stop uploading documents as "own work" unless they are actually your own work. Scanning a document from your collection does not make it your own work, just like scanning a printout of someone else's artwork does not make it your own work.

I have told you this before. You are making extra work for other people to fix your mistakes. I am sure you are not deliberately wasting other people's time, but that is the result.

The documents you are uploading are useful BUT YOU HAVE TO DO IT PROPERLY.

If you need help to understand how to do it properly, just ask. DS ( talk) 04:30, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

Okay, for instance,
  1. For "source", never put {{own}} because these are not documents you created. For "source" put "Huddyhuddy's private collection".
  2. For "date", never put the date that you are uploading the document. Put the date that the document was created. If the best you can do is "during the second world war" or "before 1932" or whatever, that's fine. It's more correct than saying the documents were created in 2020.
  3. For creator, never put "User:Huddyhuddy", because you are not the creator of the document. Put the name of the government that created the document.
  4. For license, if the document is text-only, or if the only other content is a government's official emblem, put {{PD-text}}. If the document has a photograph, that's more complicated; please don't upload such photos until they're sorted out individually. DS (talk) 05:05, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
Further to what DS wrote, if you know where you got it, when it was created, or who created it, say so.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 08:04, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

Ourpassports.com

Hello Neil,

I saw that you are one of Wikimedia Commons' most profilic contributors in the field passports and other identity documents, I am not sure if this will interest you or not, but as I consider this issue to be of great educational value and as time is (unfortunately) finite I have realised that I cannot give this website the justice it deserves.

There is a website called "Ourpassports.com", it is operated by an Israeli personal documents collector (reading from your user page it is something you have in common with Mr. Kaplan), this website is perhaps the most valuable website related to old identity documents on the internet and even better, most images from the website are in the public domain. Well, as my wife is a Jew (mixed Caribbean Portuguese Jew and Dutch Ashkenazy Jew) I have heard a lot of personal stories from holocaust survivors (as her grandfather worked as a slave in Germany) and have had the fortune of directly learning about the European theatre and German aggression from both survivors and their direcr descendants. As an Israeli you might have had similar experiences and, I hope, an interest and empathy for these people and their personal stories. Ourpassports.com is essentially "a museum for these people" and it tells their stories through beautiful illustrations in the form of these identity documents.

Unfortunately I don't have a working e-mail 📧 address (I can only receive and not send e-mails because I refuse to buy a SIM card when almost all online instant messaging is gratis), so I cannot contact the owner of Ourpasaports.com to donate their scans to Wikimedia Commons, and as the website seems to have either an expired security certificate or one that hasn't been properly set up, I am afraid that the website might disappear soon. Unfortunately we cannot import the beautiful and sometines heart-breaking stories from the website in full as those are copyrighted, but I try to re-word as much as possible to get as complete information to Wikimedia Commons as possible within the terms of copyright laws.

I hope that not only you will look at this website, but if you may be inspired to, also help import all images from it. There are likely many thousands of images from the website and it won't be easy. Personally I have been importing images related to currency for years and I don't think that I might ever be done, but Ourpassports.com is only one website and as you seem to have a passion for passports and other identity documents, maybe you can also see the value of this amazing website (believe me, I have never interacted with the owner and have no conflict of interest with it, other than that I greatly enjoy reading it).

If you do decide to import the images from Ourpassports.com I would request you to add at least a courtesy link to the website so people can discover where it's from and maybe read the lovely stories written by Mr. Kaplan. Also, I am trying to organise all the images in "Category:Images from Ourpassports.com" so people could see which ones have been imported and which ones need to be imported. A lot, in fact all, of these images are one of a kind documents that tell unique stories that I am quite sure that you as a fellow identity document collector might appreciate.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 20:26, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Mandate passport used by Israeli pilot Ephraim Henenson to bring the Avia S-199 to Israel in 1948.jpg.

Thank you.

File:Mandate passport used by Israeli pilot Ephraim Henenson to bring the Avia S-199 to Israel in 1948.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Statement by Huddyhuddy regarding recent deletion taggings

Hello, Good morning. I collect and research old documents and passports for over 15 years and share them with the public online for historical purposes. All the images I use are in my private archive and such sharing has lead to various museums and public archives thanking me for uploading them and I enjoy having them online for educational purposes only. Not sure why I am being warned to delete private images, which are only intended for the public and historical education. I am very worried now. Please consider them to continue having them being shared publicly. Thank you, Neil Huddyhuddy (talk) 11:02, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, Huddyhuddy!

It is because you tagged the images with the wrong copyright © tags as most are in the public domain, also you listed yourself as the author, but with "author" they mean the person that made the original document. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 11:08, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
I've told you before that you were doing it wrong. You have to do it properly. We have explained to you, detail, how to do it properly. You have not consistently done it properly. Now other people are gradually fixing your mistakes. DS (talk) 17:57, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:0passport 1951.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

@JuTa: , most of these are in the public domain but the uploader failed to add the correct license tags, as you are a veteran editor could you perhaps add the correct templates? When I have the time I will try to explain to them how to add better templates. Many of these files are used on multiple Wikimedia websites and we don't tag pictures of the Mona Lisa with these tags either. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 07:47, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
@Donald Trung, the images need proper sources as well, to make the public domain status verifyable. Only to change the license tags will not solve the pooblem(s). --JuTa 07:50, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
Most of these passports (if not all of them) were issued by their respective governments, in most cases this is listed on the image somehow. Starting a deletion request would be better than tagging them for automated deletion. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 07:53, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
@::@Donald Trung, feel free to do so. --JuTa 08:04, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

Hello everyone, Thank you for trying to help. Though I am a veteran in uploading images only, I am completely unaware that private images need this amendment. Also, I am very worried now about this development. I upload images from my private collection archive for educational purposes only, for sharing them with the public. Neil Huddyhuddy (talk) 11:14, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi, I now changed all the rest of uploads to a regular deleteion request. Please try to correct sources, authors and licenses. Thx. --JuTa 12:10, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
Thank you JuTa for assisting. Will I need to go into each image and amend the source? this is possible? Huddyhuddy (talk) 12:17, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
