Note

Hi Kanonkas. I am new on this. Sorry for my mistakes. I have been informed you deleted my first contribution. It was abor CINE CONCIENCIA. Please tell me why or what do I need to correct. Thanks, —Preceding unsigned comment added by User:Yaakunah (talk • contribs) 20:14, 18 October 2008(UTC)

Please only use one account, otherwise it's pretty hard to get hold of who is asking as you didn't create the page with your account but with your ip. Anyway, the page was an article and not a gallery. We aren't hosting encyclopedic articles, that's what Wikipedia is for. Hope this helped you! Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 20:21, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Picasaweb

Does Commons only allow flickr images to be placed here, not picasaweb ones? I don't know much about picasa--it seems to be a European site and I am in Western Canada. I don't know if all their images are copyrighted. What do you think? Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 20:24, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

No I don't believe you should do that, you should continue to use Flickr only & not Picasaweb (if you ever used it) to upload files. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 20:26, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I haven't used it either, but the dozen or so pictures I checked are all marked "All rights reserved". If that changes, then it could be as usefull of a resource as flicker. J.smith (talk) 00:04, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Image download problem

Dear Kanonkas, What's the problem with this image: Image:Ceramic Kabyle peoples double vessel (19th century).jpg I didn't crop it or do anything but it still has some problems appearing on file after flickr passed it and uploaded a new copy. Strange, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:22, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Possibly a thumbnail issue? Glad it got solved. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 12:28, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Advice on old paintings

Dear Kanonkas. This portrait by Rubens (1577-1640) is not on Commons: [1] Question: Can I download this image on Commons and use this MFA source and give the license as 'PD-Art' like this Image:Peter Paul Rubens25.jpg? I don't think old paintings can be copyrighted...but I want to be sure here. What about this other image by Rubens in the MET: [2]. Its also not Commons. if I use it the source would be MET. What do you think? Please help --Leoboudv (talk) 02:50, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Sorry I'm not so good with PD stuff, Lupo on the other hand is. I suggest you try to leave him a note. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 15:57, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Some info please?

Can you give me any background on this block. Nothing wrong with it at all - I'm just trying to dig out why they did what they did. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 14:11, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Oh well first thing you want to look is the AN thread which should give you the info. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 15:56, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks - that makes sense and CU list has been informed of the detail. I think the global account is now locked. --Herby talk thyme 16:08, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Rename failed

  Done the problem is that I didn't use {{Rename media}} but {{Rename}}. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 20:49, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for all your kind help Kanonkas. Regards from Metro Vancouver, Canada --Leoboudv (talk) 22:23, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

IfD

I have a question on a sensitive subject. Is there any reason why this DR here is still open given that the nominator, 20percent, has changed his mind and asked it be kept? Maybe this DR fell between the cracks. I certainly trust Bryan's judgment here. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:45, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Well it takes time to close DR's you see & I'd rather not close it if that's fine for you. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 14:46, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
  • That's OK. All I know is that on WP, when the nominator withdraws his/her request on an AfD, the deletion request is closed. I suppose copyright issues are more complicated on Commons. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 23:03, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

hi friend

do you remember me, right?, well my block has finished so i think isnt bad if i talk with you, you said that that IP list who that guy Roy has isn't a privacy violation, but you think he may want to get through my house or something? i think hes tracing me like i was a hacker or something, i think he is getting exaggerated, but as long as i dont talk to him, he sure will remove that IP list. Please give me your opinion, thanks.

Yeah well I doubt that's going to happend to you. I think he is just checking all the ip's you've been using, possibly to see your patterns. --Kanonkas(talk) 03:27, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
what are patterns exactly?, but well yeah that incident with Roy its one of the things that i will be penitent for a long, long time. And all started by a joke who someone maked to me.
See w:Pattern. --Kanonkas(talk) 03:42, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
Ok. Im really really sorry with all the users who i insulted, but if they want to ignore me, then i will ignore them, too. One thing that i dont tolerate is that(i dont know if is on purpose or just a mistake) that Timothy, my internet pseudonym, gets written on lowercase "timothy" such if i wasnt a person.

FYI, another editor on en pointed out that this photo was a copyvio from http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/talk2action/muthee_kalnins_joyner.jpg, on http://www.talk2action.org/story/2008/9/20/171755/145/Front_Page/Palin_Muthee_and_the_Witch_Journalists_Miss_the_Major_Story I see you've already deleted it, but I thought it couldn't hurt to let you know that it was later confirmed to be a copyvio. Romanesque frescos in Denmark

Hade bra! garden 11:48, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

Moraea

Hi. Before deleting please ask me what I am doing. You will notice that Ericas have a page on which the various erica species are hilighted, as do proteas, as do leucospermums as do several other genera which have many plants. There are 127 species of Moraea. They too need one page on which to hilight the species. Kindly revert. Andrew massyn (talk) 19:32, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

Gallery pages should have media content and not article content, that's what Wikipedia is for. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 19:42, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
It was not article content. It was the species taxonomy.Andrew massyn (talk) 19:46, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
Yes I noticed, I usually give taxonomy articles an exempt but that one hardly even had any content, if you would please update it a little more that would be nice. I'm restoring now. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 19:48, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. I was in the process of doing it when you deleted it. Andrew massyn (talk) 19:51, 26 October 2008 (UTC).

Thanks

Commons requires a little tiding.

Hi, thanks for trusting me as admistrator. I will be trying to make a good use of this tools, and using it with care. Surely this will motivate me to work more on the project, as well as in other areas ;) Sfu (talk) 09:30, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Rename problem

Dear Kanonkas, I finally learned why the rename didn't work out. It wasn't the "rename media" text...it was because the rename bot looks at the last person who does an edit on an image as Wuzur noted here on this image by Rubens "Under help": [4] (unfortunately it was me!) I didn't know this until today sadly. By the way, can you delete this image I uploaded: Image:Portrait of Hans Schellenberger nee Ehem (1507).jpg. I just found that there was another image of this painting for this artist on Commons. It wasn't easy to find his pictures on Commons. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:44, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Yes I forgot to say that the rename media template was only a redirect, I'm glad that Wuzur told you the correct reason as I never knew that was the reason &   done with the image. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 20:04, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Watermark

Dear Kanonkas, If I move this Copyright Free image on Hungarian WP of an Ancient Egyptian chapel to Commons, will it be deleted because it has a timestamp: [5]? Or is there an expert you know on Commons who specializes in removing timestamps and other distracting watermarks? Please help...as I am sure you know of this problem. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 05:55, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Will look into it, but just a note I have no experience with this "timestamp". --Kanonkas(talk) 18:46, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Route der Industriekultur

Dear Kanonkas, this is a complaint! You deleted the mentioned article because it was supposedly "Out of project scope". Please tell me the exact paragraph the article I only just began was violating and will keep on violating in future. I really can't understand your intention. Are you adept in the Route der Industriekultur and can you read my and other users mind so that you exactly know into what this article will develop? I think you better soon undelete the article and let me work on it further! Greetings, -- Ies (talk) 18:28, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

That was more or less not a gallery page, articles belonges at Wikipedia. See our project scope. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 18:34, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
This was not YET a gallery page. Why did you delete the page as soon as produced and didn't wait the few minutes I required to choose the right images? And why don't you simply ask what a user is doing before you delete his page in the act of working? Your behaviour appears quite unfriendly! I'm asking you again to undelete the page. -- Ies (talk) 19:06, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
Please calm down and speak in an appropriate manner. You could have just made the gallery in your sandbox, or just at Commons:Sandbox to test & then publish it in the gallery namespace, but at the time I was revewing the gallery namespace I catched that gallery page which had no content, which you should have fixed before publishing in the gallery namespace to prevent such a deletion. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 19:24, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
Want you in the end please undelete the file so that I can fix what you're complaining and what I would have fixed already if you hadn't deleted the file? Greetings, -- Ies (talk) 16:11, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
The same also goes to Route der Industriekultur 24 - Industrienatur. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 18:10, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

Rename request

Dear Kanonakas, I made an error on the name of this statue: Image:Statue of Ahmose Nefertari by John Campana.jpg It is that of Ankhenesneferibre, the daughter of Pharaoh Psamtik II of the 26th Saite Dunasty of Egypt. Can you place a rename request on this image to Image:Statue of Ankhenesneferibre by John Campana.jpg please? Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 03:31, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

  Done. --Kanonkas(talk) 06:44, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

possible Deletion request

Dear Kanonkas, Can you inspect these 2 pd-old claims by me: Image:The Holy Family with Saints Francis and Anne and the Infant Saint John the Baptist (1630s).jpg and Image:Mulay Ahmad (1609).jpg It seems there is a copyright "2000-2008 The Metropolitan Museum of Art. All rights reserved" and copyright 2008 MFA tag at the bottom of the web page source which I missed. So, even though the paintings were done in the 17th century by Rubens, the image is perhaps? copyrighted. If you agree, please delete these 2 images. These are the only 2 Commons images I uploaded with this claim. I thought they were CF free since the artists had died more than 70 yrs before. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:28, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

They are fine. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 12:16, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
  • Thank you Kanonkas. So then, PD-Art would apply chiefly to paintings and papyri and not other items like artifacts/objects which are certainly 3-D in nature. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 17:35, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
    • Yes. Also to lithographs, woodcuts, and so on. Note that if the photograph also shows the frame of the painting, the tag does not apply anymore. In that case, crop away the painting's frame. Lupo 07:16, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Question

Hi Kanonkas.

In my administrative work on en.wp, I find that many times I need to perform logged actions here on Commons to finish cleaning up a matter, usually while cleaning up after an image copyright violation from a page I deleted on en.wp, or a deleting attack images after speedying their counterparts. I also frequently find that inexplicably images on the Main Page of Wikipedia are not protected here on Commons, and are not locally uploaded on en.wp.

While I don't mind asking for assistance, it would be far easier to be able to do stuff myself. However, I am not very active on Commons, and if I was to become an administrator, I would likely almost exclusively use my tools in relation to matters on Wikipedia. Do you think there is any ghost of a possibility I could pass an RFA here? Would my contributions on en.wp mean anything, or are you supposed to be judged based solely on actions performed on Commons?

Thanks for your time, J.delanoygabsadds 03:21, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

I'll get back to you on e-mail. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 07:04, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Template:Pink_CC

Hi, could you please protect thisone and its translations to de, fr, it (I do not speak Polish, therefore can not know whether thatone might have to be improved. The other versions I quoted were created by Rocket000 and me and are pretty perfect. See template talk page on this, or User_talk:WeHaWoe/TestSite. It would not be good if someone tried again to change the license the template grants after it is used by several persons, as has happened recently (I do not know how to check the number of users, or whether I'd be allowed to, at all).

Besides, in case you think the documentation of the template's history on my /TestSite might be of general interest, please move it to an appropriate place. As Rocket has vanished (does not reply on private mail, either), I'm very much afraid we will not meet him any more. So, this should be one more trace he left. I badly miss him.

Thanks, --Wolfgang H.W. (talk) 08:08, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

PS: I'm going to change my username soon, because thisone was vandalized worldwide the very day SUL was open to everyone (May 27-28) by someone misusing my nick "_WeHaWoe_" to create accounts of same name in many projects and trying to get infinitely blocked there by overwriting with same nonsense-almost-porn-pic some arbitrary existing pic in one arbitrary article of such project (see).

I'm not sure I'd like to protect this, as it's a template + it should be a high used template to get fully protected. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 08:20, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
Would be nice if you'd note how many user use it, at this time. --Wolfgang H.W. (talk) 14:34, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Bureaucrat

With the sad resignation of Rocket, I was having a look at who could make a potential new bureaucrat. Your name stood out among the rest. Are you interested? On the other hand, I do not think you, Kanonkas, are ready for a bureaucratship at this time. I think you have quite a bit of seasoning yet in front of you first. If you were nominated, at this time, I would oppose on grounds of not yet being ready, without prejudice to supporting at some future time, and with no offense intended. ++Lar: t/c 17:29, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Moving of my RFA

Hi Kanonkas, thanks for moving my RFA to the place it belongs. Nice start, huh? ;) Somehow the form on COM:A must be broken, as it automatically created the page without the prefix. Some javascript seems to be broken or whatever, as it should create the page in the right namespace, should it not? Anyway, I clicked saving withouth re-checking the title, so I am really sorry for generating work. Regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 21:17, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

However, I cannot figure out where the error is. I checked the syntax of COM:A, it is correct according to the inputbox-manual. Nevertheless, the default value is not returned to the client in the HTML code. Is this a known issue? -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 21:23, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
Yes, the inputbox is currently broken. Mike.lifeguard will be trying to fix this I think. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 21:25, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

User talk pages

In response to this: user talk pages are looked at to see is an uploader has a record of copyright violations. Users with ambitions to be administrators should not try to sanitize their talk page, because talk pages are used to see if a person is fit to be an admin. Now SterkeBak is only admin under probation, and he should not censor his talk page at all. On wikipedias where I am active, SterkeBak's kind of revisionism is very much frowned upon. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 10:12, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

This image is not a copyvio so i don't cover up. All messages on my talkpage come in my archive. A Deletion reqeust comes in the DR archive. I don't see the need to archive it also. It is not censor because you only tell me to look at a DR. I have responded on that DR. And this is commons not other wiki's Sterkebaktalk 10:22, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
Well, I tried to explain the need for proper archiving of user talk pages, especially for admins, especially for an admin under probation. My notification of Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Westergasfabriek1903.jpg is not in the User talk:SterkeBak/1 archive. Of course it will be archived somewhere else, but not so easy to find for someone who wants to evaluate SterkeBak's track record. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 10:34, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

if it makes you happy place it in my archive. But keep it off my talkpage. Sterkebaktalk 10:59, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

One should not tamper with (other people's) archives. SterkeBak has a history of sanitizing his talk page, for example here. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 11:56, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

This is looking like harrasment. Sterkebaktalk 15:20, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

Obama speech deletions

Hi, I see that you have deleted 2 images that were uploaded from flickr under the CC Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 2.0 Generic license. The creator of the two images [6][7] expressly stated that these images may be used as long as they are not used for commercially and he is properly attributed. I fail to understand why you deleted these because of "commercial use" concerns. --Flewis (talk) 10:53, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi. Commons does not work with non commercional images. I think that is the reasson the are deleted. When uploading flickr images to commons please make sure the have a cc-by-sa or cc-by licence. Other licence are not oke for use on commons. @Kanonkas sorry but i saw and try to help. Hope you don't mind. Sterkebaktalk 10:58, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
Non-commercial. . . the images weren't being used commercially. . . --Flewis (talk) 11:11, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

I just saw your answer for my question just now. With this I'd like to know if the DR cited above can be closed. Mizunoryu 大熊猫❤小熊猫 (talk) 03:35, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Flickr reviewer close

Regarding your action at Commons talk:Flickr images/reviewers - I agree that this was not appropriate for it to be closed by a non-admin - but consensus is quite clear there that there is general community support for Mitchazenia (talk · contribs) to be a flickr reviewer. Care to reclose it, or mind if I do? Cirt (talk) 07:09, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

Nevermind. Cirt (talk) 11:05, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
And unless I'm much mistaken those closing must at least be reviewers. --Herby talk thyme 11:41, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
Ouch, my bad. I didn't see they were a trusted user. Sorry for any inconvenience. --Kanonkas(talk) 13:55, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
Hi Kanonkas, it seems Herbythyme has quite a big issue with the way I reverted your undoing of Mifter's closure of Mitch's reviewer request (see my talk page). I just want to let you know, I was in no way acting maliciously or bad faith; I was just fixing a small mistake you made on your behalf. As you know, I consider you quite highly. I'm kind of irritated someone has a problem with this incredibly minor issue, and as a newish editor myself, it isn't half making me want to just turn right back round back to Wikipedia. Best wishes, How do you turn this on (talk) 20:46, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
Oh it's just fine, we all make some mistakes :) Please reconsider the last part, I believe Herby just wanted to notify you how we usually do it here, I'm sure Herby meant no harm, and Commons is a little different then en.wp with that I think he means you should have left me a note on my talk page and discuss before rv. However it's all fine, so let us just bury that. I'll try to help you around here, if you want! Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 21:08, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

Lisence help

Hi. Could you check the lisencing on these two scans from the Norwegian Bible of 1891. I'm not sure what lisences to use for things that are this old.... Image:Bibel002.jpg and Image:Bibel001.jpg. Thank you. 3s (talk) 23:40, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Looks fine. Du kan snakke norsk hvis det er lettere for deg :) --Kanonkas(talk) 14:11, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
Ok. Tenkte det var greit å ta det på engelsk, slik at flere forstod. Men norsk går fint, det også... Takk for titten! MVH 3s (talk) 15:21, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

User:I-210

Can you tell me why this user was blocked here? We've been having problems with him, resulting in him being blocked on the English Wikipedia. Apparently there's more to this situation than I know... --Rschen7754 (talk) 08:01, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Please see your inbox. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 14:09, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Maybe it's me

I can't see the rationale here? The block appears to be the same as the original one - thanks --Herby talk thyme 14:14, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I was supposed to put "web server" there, but then I tried the new block option tool (if you see the extra tabs) so my comment disappeared there. --Kanonkas(talk) 14:15, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
Ah - makes sense now - thanks --Herby talk thyme 14:25, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Dont you think its doubtfull if the flickr uploader is also the creator (look at the description on flickr) abf /talk to me/ 15:16, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

No, it's a reporter from E Online! (Kristin) who is releasing some of her photos on flickr under a free license. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 15:20, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Correct image description

Dear Kanonkas, As a highly experienced Admin, do you know how to correct the description for this more than 3 year old image file: Image:AnatolianCivMuseum.DO.jpg? Its an important and great image but the text is jumbled up a bit.

  • PS: I think it is strange that you call an Admin a 'sys op' in Europe. This must be a local idiosyncracy just as we in the US/Canada call our lecturers in University by the term 'Professor' whereas in Europe, you call them 'Doctor.' Anyway, I find the word sys op rather vague...I thought this was some kind of computer specialist. (But what do I know) With kind Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:41, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
Fixed it now, hope it's better! Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 09:24, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

Bad image names

Hi,

When I come across a file such as Image:AA1aa.jpg, is there a template to use to tag it for an unsuitable name? Thanks, How do you turn this on (talk) 16:38, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

Well you can try using {{Rename}}, though you can't really "move" the image. You need to be a trusted user, when you are a trusted user you can get a bot to move the image to a more appropriate name. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 16:43, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
Well no, I was hoping by tagging it someone would want to come along and do it for me :-) Seems a bit odd that only trusted users can rename images. I could very easily do it myself without a problem! Best wishes, How do you turn this on (talk) 16:59, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
To be more precise, nobody can rename media. They have to be re-uploaded under a new name, and then their name has to be changed in each wikipedia project where they are used. The template {{Rename}} just orders a bot to do the hard work, but it seems that up to now there still is left quite a job for the admins to do, as the bot up to now does work perfectly all the time (e.g., when media are used within special boxes). That is why quite a few admins are not very much welcoming today's renaming procedure ;)
In case you want to become a trusted user yourself and have done the required minimum 200 edits on commons, just follow the link. Anyways, using the above quoted template would be a good idea (and rise the number of your edits ;). ciao, Wolfgang (talk) 09:59, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
I know they can't. It's simple enough for me to reupload and tag the old one for deletion, or even create my own bot to do it. How do you turn this on (talk) 13:15, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Correct image tag?

Dear Kanonkas, Can you correct the license info for this picture: Image:EgyptianScribe.jpg? The web site creator said all his images are CF free with No restrictions. I don't know why Commons says it is missing essential source information and can be deleted. I did not upload this image here but have placed several other images from the author's egyptarchive web page images on Commons--and have even told the author--J. Bodsworth. And he has said in reply that he is happy his images are being used elsewhere.

Hi Leoboudv, one of the copyright tags was not filled out completely, and caused the "no source" tag to be added automatically. I filled out the info for you from the source site. --J.smith (talk) 21:33, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
  • Thanks J. Smith for your help. I was really concerned that a legitimate CF image would be deleted for no apparent reason. Unfortunately, I am not as well versed in Commons procedures as you or Kanonkas. With kind Regards from Canada --Leoboudv (talk) 02:00, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
