Sengai Podhuvan edit

Kiran, Sengai Podhuvan is a known Tamil scholar and long time Tamil wikipedian. I have been helping him upload images from his published books to commons. You can check his global contributions and Tamil Wikipedia user page clearly show his identity - he uses his real name in contributions. He is known to the Tamil Wiki community and was recently honoured in the Mumbai wiki conference as a noteworthy wikipedian. He was interviewed by Victor Grigas from the WMF for the stories project. What i am saying is - his real life identity is well established and this is not an imposter uploading some one else's works. Asking him to send a OTRS confirmation mail is unnecessary.--Sodabottle (talk) 08:43, 1 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi first of all sorry for the inconvenience caused, I am not at all aware of these things. But I believe any member of the community can come up with a DR again, since the work is first published outside commons. So I think it is better we have to get a ticket form the author as well as the publisher. --Kiran Gopi (talk) 11:06, 1 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Ok will ask him to send a OTRS mail.--Sodabottle (talk) 11:18, 1 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Also please take care of the agreements with the author and the publisher:)--Kiran Gopi (talk) 11:22, 1 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

The publisher doesnt come into picture at all - the author owns the copyright of his work - not the publisher. --Sodabottle (talk) 11:31, 1 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Remained for just keeping the relationship b/w the author and publisher.--Kiran Gopi (talk) 13:24, 1 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
I am sorry for the harsh words Kiran. You are absolutely right to remind about the possibility of such a contract. I spoke to Sengai podhuvan and he confirms there is no such contract and he owns the images exclusively. He will be sending a permissions mail to OTRS (in the prescribed format, listing his uploads) to confirm the same. I apologise again for being impolite and rude.--Sodabottle (talk) 13:27, 1 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
LOL No issue, I also made mistake, didn't communicate the real issue earlier and straight forward :(. Kindly inform to Sengai that first upload all the images and then send an OTRS ticket. Sengai's willingness to give his work to commons is much appreciated. --Kiran Gopi (talk) 13:36, 1 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Kiran, i see you have tagged them "the message was not sufficient". What else is required in the mail. I helped him write the mail and i thought the mail pretty explicitly states he is the sole owner and exclusive rights owner. What else is required here?--Sodabottle (talk) 13:28, 5 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
The permission was sufficient, and I asked some more info. If I get a proper reply, will successfully close it as early as possible. --Kiran Gopi (talk) 18:20, 5 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Closed the ticket, will add the template soon. --Kiran Gopi (talk) 04:24, 8 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

I added permission on Sengai Podhuvan's uploads except this one. Is it a derivative work? --Kiran Gopi (talk) 05:01, 8 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open edit

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

"Happy Diwali!" edit

While Diwali is popularly known as the "festival of lights", the most significant spiritual meaning behind it is "the awareness of the inner light". It is the belief that there is something beyond the physical body and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atman. The celebration of Diwali as the "victory of good over evil” refers to the light of higher knowledge dispelling all ignorance, the ignorance that masks one's true nature, not as the body, but as the unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent reality. With this awakening come compassion and the awareness of the oneness of all things (higher knowledge). This brings Satcitananda (joy or peace). Just as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Diwali is the celebration of this Inner Light. While the story behind Diwali and the manner of celebration varies from region to, the essence is the same – to rejoice in the Inner Light! And this year Diwali and All Souls' Day come together to fully defeat the Evil! "Happy Diwali!"JKadavoor Jee 06:16, 2 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello Kiran Gopi, the following content you uploaded violates one or more of our policies and therefore has been or will soon be deleted:

File:Cycle sculpture jeddah.JPG

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:
  • use in any work, regardless of content
  • creation of derivative works
  • commercial use
  • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.

Important message for file movers edit

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
